Is Niagara falls in New York?
We're going to be in New York City next month, but one of the days we wanted to take a drive to visit Niagara Falls.
I've always known this is in Canada. But i just saw that there is a Niagara Falls, NY.
Do I have to cross over to Canada to enjoy the falls?
I dont have a passport, so I was hoping I could stay in the U.S.
Thanks for any info.

Where Niagara Falls is located, there are actually two cities, one on each bank of the river. The one in USA is called Niagara Falls, NY. The on in Canada is Niagara Falls, Ontario. Both of these cities operate independently of each other.
On the New York side, there are actually two sections of the falls. They are called the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. These are not the falls that you usually see on TV or in postcards. The one that people usually want to see is the Horseshoe Falls.
You do NOT have to cross into Canada to go see the falls. The American side does have some lookout areas where you can see parts of the falls. You just won't be able to see the full view of them. Kind of like not being able to get a good view of the Statue of Liberty well because you were only allowed to sit on the south side of the Staten Island ferry.
And of course, there is always the Maid of the Mist boat tours. They have departures from both the Canadian and American sides, go up to the edge of the falls, then turn around and come back to the same dock.

New York is big state, and Niagara Falls is 400 miles from NYC, which means it will take 7 1/2 hrs to drive there, and another 7 1/2 hrs to drive back. It's not a day trip.
There's plenty of stuff to see in NYC, so save the Falls for another trip. If you want a day trip out of the city, try West Point which is interesting and in a pretty part of the Hudson valley.

There is the city of Niagara Falls, NY and the city of a Niagara Falls, Ontario. Located on opposite sides of the Niagara river. You can see the falls from both sides of the river but the best and closest views are from the Canadian side (IMO)

You'll want to go to the Canadian side for best views.
