Haha no it's not. Most people where I live at least think Mercedes & BMW are luxury car companies

No it is not. Ford occupies the same place in the market as it does in the U.S. if not a little lower down. The European brands that you consider prestigious are mostly also considered prestigious in Europe though perhaps not quite to the same extent. Volkswagen is probably the exception as that ranks about the same as Ford. The major difference between the two markets is that you tend to only get the upper level models across the ranges, it is unlikely that a U.S. customer would buy a Mercedes-Benz C Class saloon with cloth seats, manual gears, manual windows, no air conditioning and an engine of a displacement less than 2 litres but that is not uncommon in Europe, also Mercedes Benz is one of Europe's largest suppliers of buses, trucks and taxis.

Weirdly this does somewhat work in reverse as the Jeep brand is considered prestigious as are Chrysler Voyager and Chrysler 300C (these last two to the extent that a very old and traditionally very prestigious brand name is going to be used to sell them in most of Europe from now on - Lancia)!

No they're family cars. Audi and BMW are more luxurious anyway.
