Best College Football Coach Alive Today?

I nominate Steve Spurrier because he dominated the SEC in 90s to the point of changing the league from boring to exciting, he coached South Carolina (!) to an SEC Championship game. And, this is the big one, he won an ACC Championship as the head coach of Duke. Duke for God's sake. Oh sure the ACC was weak at the time but nobody won in recent history before or since.

Disqualified candidates:

Jim Tressel: liars, cheaters, scumbags, and butt wipes are automatically out.

Rich Rod: see above.

Pete Carroll: see above and get real, the man had a cup of coffee in college ball.

Potential Alternatives in No Particular Order:

Bobby Bowden because he's Bobby and Awesome (but not the winner because of Free Shoes and not winning at Duke. Duke! WTF?)

Joe Pa because he hasn't died yet (not the winner because, in my opinion, he never changed the game like Spurrier did in the SEC and he didn't win at Duke. Freaking Duke.)

That one guy that coached at BYU for years but I can't remember his name.

The guy at Mount Union that seems to win every dang game he coaches.

And any living coach that has a winning record at military academy because that's hard work. And they deserve consideration.

Other nominations are welcome. Especially guys from D2 or D3 that I may not be aware of.

You have made a good point about Spurrier with his winning at different schools, including Duke (seriously Duke}. And he is still coaching so his win total and possible championships are still possible, but less likely at South Carolina. I do like Spurrier and loved him at Florida but I can't say best one alive today. Since you mentioned the guy that use to coach BYU I an assuming the coach can be retired??? The coach from BYU was LaVell Edwards. He was a great coach at a school that had the most prolific passing attack and QB factory for years. And he did win a National Championship.

My choice would be Tom Osborne the former coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. 255 wins with a winning percentage of .835% 3 National Championships

But if it has to be an active coach I might have to go with Joe Paterno for obvious reasons. But I wonder how much of the actual coaching he has done the past few years but he has over 400 wins and 2 National Championships. Just an incredible career.

Otherwise I might have to go with Spurrier or Mack Brown at Texas he more wins than Spurrier and a better bowl record than Spurrier with an 11-7 record (Spurriers is 7-10). And I would probably say Brown cause he has won games at other schools as well like Tulane and North Carolina. But an argument can easily be made for Spurrier.

So I hope my reasoning makes sense to you.

    Nick Saban.

Yes, I am a bit biased, but he has won tow national titles at two different schools as well. He has had a rather impressive run the last 10 years or so. He is 36-5 the last three years with Bama and has had at least a top 5 recruiting class the last 4. He is a good motivator, X's and O's guy and defensive master-mind. As far as who is active today, I'll take Nick over the field.

Bobby Petrino. Revived the Arkansas Razorback Program and is going to bring a National Championship in a few seasons

joepa, not even a question. most wins and not many loses, 2 national titles(should have more but sometimes never got a chance, such as in 1994, when both psu and nebraska went undefeated, but didnt get to play each other at the end, and for some reason nebraska was give the title), He was able to get al his wins clean too, Penn State (and stanford) have never violated a ncaa rule.

I gotta go with that man down in Alabama Nick Saben. I do like your choice as well. I would want my son to play in the SEC for these 2 men

How many schools went 12-0 last year and made it to the National Championship? One: ND. Sure, they lost, but they lost to the strongest team in the NCAA. I'd hardly call that "underachieving."
