Click "My Activity" at top of page
Select "Edit My Preferences"
Click "Update photo or avatar"
Follow instructions to select your photo/avatar
Click "Submit" on bottom of original page when done
To make a carton avatar:
Make sure your Pulse profile is not hidden.

This is the old way it's fast, easy and uncomplicated. Go below, create your avatar and save. Then, click your current default avatar then click edit my preferences and you will see where to check use avatar.
Ensure your pulse profile is not set as private.
