Should I send a copy of my Social Security Card to credit card company?
I recently applied for a student credit card with Discover online and because I did not provide my SS # (for security purposes), they gave me a call and asked me questions and asked to me send in a copy of my SS card and driver's license to process my application. My mom, who has credit cards with several banks said I shouldn't be sending my social security if they have a copy of my ID. I just want to know if it's necessary or not since I will send it tomorrow and want to make sure just in case.

Your Mom is wrong. Discover has the obligation to verify your identity. If you want the account, send it.

If you called the phone number that was on the back of your card, you got to the actual Customer Service. So it is a legitimate request. The reason they could be asking for this is that as you said it is your first credit card, so they need to verify who you are. However, the only strange thing in this is that this is something that is usually done BEFORE they give you the card.

That request DID NOT come form Discover. They will require your social security NUMBER, but NOT a copy of the card OR your drivers license. Giving the information to Discover is safe. Giving to whoever actually called you is not.

Yes, you should as it as proof of your identity which is required for discover to process your application . I know this from personal experience Capital One has requested me to do this and I followed through and got approved for the card discover and many other credit cards may request this at their digression Hope this Helps! Good Luck to you!

Do not send a copy of your social security card to anybody.
I would not trust anyone who asks for it. You usually do need to provide your SS # to credit card companies for them to be able to run a credit check, but I have never has someone ask me to send them a copy.

No. You will get turned down anyway.
(experience from reading posts on here).
Better idea: Get your mom to co-sign on that card with you.
IF you get it this way. Make sure you pay in full each month.
No games of carrying balances which can easily destroy your credit and therefore your moms.
Also be aware that new federal rules have passed making it virtually impossible for anyone under 21 to get a credit card on their own..

You will NOT get any type of credit card without disclosing your SSN to the lender. That's reality. Discover is asking for those documents to verify your identity. It's likely that you have no established credit history.

They need your SSN but they don't need your card. They might require you to use alternative forms of ID (passport, driver's license, credit cards with your picture) but I would NOT send my SSN card to them. And honestly, I wouldn't be applying for a credit card through fax and mail either. That seems pretty dangerous and easy to manipulate for criminals.
