can a UK resident go to the wilds of Canada and live off the land for a holiday?
As I do not know what the regulations are in Canada I was wondering if it is possible to go and live off of fishing and shooting for a month or if it is prohibited. Does anybody know.
Thank you all for your information-thats exactly what I wanted to know. I had rather hoped to be able to take firearms with me because as you all have pointed out there some big critters out there but it sounds like it would be complicated and difficult to arrange all the permits. The fishing permit-no problem but I was hoping to be able to shoot some wild fowl or ptarmigan. Perhaps the option of going on a guided trip should be thought about. Anyrate thank you all very much.

Some further information about your idea...........
Each of the Provinces and territories have defined "hunting : and "fishing " seasons, for each type of species, so you can't just fish or hunt as you like. Fishing is closed during most of the spring spawning season, for fresh water fish, so they can reproduce. Hunting, for large species, like deer, bear, moose and elk, is strictly controlled, as to dates and locations and permits.
Secondly, in order to go hunting in Canada, even for small species like rabbits and turkeys and pheasants, you MUST have taken a hunter safety course and THEN pass the firearms licensing laws in the Province in which you intend to hunt. That process takes upwards of six months to complete, and you have to be a Canadian resident to even apply for the courses. Can you see the problems that you are facing ?? I'm not saying it cannot be done, but it will take you a great amount of both time and money to get it all arranged legally.
As a alternative, look at "guided hunting trips " that are quite expensive, but they do give you a opportunity to hunt, under the direct supervision of a licensed out-fitter, who supplies the needed permits and weapons, and food and accommodation, at a hunt camp. The same can be arranged for fishing trips, too, with an experienced guide and a boat, with all equipmet supplied for you.

Sort of.
In Yukon, anyone can camp on Crown land for up to 400 days, which is longer than you'd actually be allowed to stay as a foreigner! However, to hunt, or fish, you would need non-resident permits, and tags for each animal, which are all pretty expensive. And, you could only hunt during the hunting season for that specific animal. Some places required a licensed guide for big game hunting if you are a foreigner too. Subsistence hunting ("living off the land") is only permitted for natives. Even residents here are not allowed to do it. But, if you were here during hunting season, it would be, although good luck eating a moose in a month! You'd need to eat about 40lbs of meat a day, or more.
There was a Brit who is a survival expert. He goes to various places around the world, and is filmed surviving, which is then shown on a TV show. He did come to the Yukon, but, he didn't make it here. It's rough out there!

With the right licenses you could.I would not call it a balanced diet. Most but not all hunting seasons are in the fall. It can get very cold in Canada so watch out. If you get hurt, you will be a long, long way from help. Try to avoid being on the back page of the newspaper.

In most of the more civilized regions you would need a fishing license, and a gun permit everywhere, but otherwise, just go far enough and doo as you like. You may or may not survive, but that's your affair. Take lots of groceries, you'll need ém.

Sure. You have to take some care as there are things like bears out there that might live off you.
