Hinduism...What are the symptoms of Kundalini awakening?
How does a person practicing kundalini yoga realize that the kundalini has indeed been awakened? What are its signs and symptoms?
@prasoon. You have not seen my real pic. Its even worse. Forget answering, you will get nightmares and will certainly block me. You will ask me to change that one too. But...your concern has been noted.
@radhakrishna. I'm not practicing kundalini yoga. I just wanted to know how the practitioner realizes the higher stages since its something that only he/she experiences.
Ok. since more than 2 members have objection to my image. I change it..
@marigold. Yeh sab diplomacy hai, doston ke liye aur answers ke liye. ;) bandar hai... toh kal utke gulati marega hi !! dekhte rehna. pass-fail sab insanon ke liye hain, hamare liye nahin.

The awakening of the Kundalini is obvious when spiritual seekers or even those who are not on a spiritual path sometimes experience levels of awareness or energy transformation that they are unable to handle or for which they have no particular reference or reason. The process of Kundalini awakening can vary from person to person. Some have intense physical symptoms, while others experience mainly emotional or psychological symptoms. The changes which accompany a Kundalini awakening cover the entire physical, emotional, mental and spiritual spectrum. In this state, a person feels highly vulnerable and oversensitive to incoming stimuli. Typically they feel overwhelmed, fragmented, fearful, confused and disoriented. With their absorption in inner processes, they may not be able to look after even basic self care. All these situations can be bewildering and frightening, and at these times the practitioner need support and reassurance from a Yogic master as they undergo transformations.
Symptoms :
a) Movement of Pranas (kriyas) (Initial stages)
These are the most common symptoms. Symptoms of involuntary body spasms, jerks etc are the main symptoms which continue till the stages of Muladhara, Svadhistana, Manipura and Anahata. In certain cases these spasms continue through Vissudha, Ajna and Sahasrara. The yogic term for such jerks or spasms is 'Kriya' while medically this condition is called 'myoclonus'. Kriyas refer to a normal jerk which may occur while dropping off to sleep, while meditating, receiving massage or during other forms of deep relaxation. It is understood in cases when it is not repetitive or strongly worsening over time that it is a simple discharge of accumulated tension as one relaxes. The myoclonic jerk is usually accompanied by a sudden sensation of falling. (Some experts say this is a reaction to the astral body separating from the physical in preparation for dream travel.)
NOTE: Regular and frequent jerks with bout of dizziness calls for medical attention, since the myoclonus symptom in such cases maybe an indication of an underlying damage to the central nervous system.
b) Yogic Phenomena (Mid stages)
Some people are able do Yogic postures or hand mudra gestures which they have never learned or could not do in a normal state of consciousness. Unusual breathing patterns may appear with either very rapid or slow, shallow breathing. Some people may not breathe at all for extended periods.
c) Physical Symptoms: (Initial - Mid stages)
Unusual physiological activity with intense movement of energy, releases toxins in the body. Symptoms include mild heart rhythm problems, pain in head and spine, gastrointestinal disturbances and nervous problems. Sensations of burning, oversensitivity to sensory input, hyperactivity or lethargy and great variations in sexual desire.
d) Psychological Symptoms: (Initial - Mid stages)
Challenges to the primacy of ego consciousness and the myth of separation. It comes as no surprise that such a challenge produces a period of confusion and unbalance. The emotional roller coaster may swing from feelings of anxiety, guilt and depression, through to compassion, love and joy, with accompanying bouts of uncontrollable weeping.
e) Extra Sensory Experiences (Mid - Higher Stages)
As perception expands outside of consensus reality, some people experience atypical visual phenomena, including visions of lights, symbols, entities, or review of past life experiences. Auditory inputs may include hearing voices, music, inner sounds etc. Even the olfactory system may be stimulated with perception of scents of sandalwood, rose or incense.
f) Psychic Phenomena (Higher Stages)
With the opening up of psychic abilities, a person may experience precognition, telepathy, psychokinesis, awareness of auras and healing abilities.
g) Mystical States of Consciousness (Higher - highest stages)
A person may shift into altered states of consciousness where they directly perceive the unity underlying the world of separation and experience a deep peace and serenity with a profound knowing of wisdom. In some cases, the state of emergency due to psychological upheaval is so acute that it resembles a psychotic episode. Many experts and doctors still regard the phenomena associated with spiritual emergence as indicative of pathology because the signs are so easily confused with the indicators of psychosis, mania, depression, schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder.
The effects of Kundalini awakening and progress may sometimes be undesired. As Mr.Radhakrishna Prr rightly insists, the awakening experience must be done under the guidance of a Yogic master, so that proper guidance and advice can be given to the practitioner. Only a good master will be able to differentiate between a genuine awakening and a medical condition, since symptomatically there will be similarities.

Symptoms vary from person to person depending upon his karma. What Dnut said is quite correct.
It is always difficult to put such symptoms in a fixed rule.
Surprisingly most of the symptoms of kundalini awakening are same as a mental patients that is why modern people misunderstand kundalini
One sure symptom in the beginning is sudden bursts of unexplained illness coming and vanishing suddenly and change in group of friends / relatives
symptoms are different for different people and different stages
I agree with my brother Asura that the things about kundalini can not be discussed here and those who tell have only book knowledge

When Kundalini is awakened it passes on from Muladhara to Sahasrara through all the Chakras. At every centre to which the Yogi directs the Kundalini, he experiences a special form of Ananda (Bliss) and gains special Siddhis (psychic powers) and knowledge. He enjoys the Supreme Bliss when Kundalini is taken to Sahasrara Chakra.
In kundalini yoga, there are various yogic practices held to incite the energy in Muladhara including: asanas (such as Garudasana, Shashankasana and Siddhasana); nosetip gazing, or Nasikagra Drishti; specific pranayamas; and most importantly the practice of mula bandha the contraction of the perineum, which awakens kundalini.
Muladhara is considered the 'root' or 'foundation' chakra, and is the transcendental basis of physical nature. It is also the seat of kundalini awakening, which begins its ascent here. Alternatively it is called the seat of the 'red bindu', or subtle drop, which is caused to rise up to the 'white bindu' in the head in order to unite the female and masculine energies of Shakti and Shiva.

I'd like to take this opportunity, to explain kundalini as I understand it through my own experience.
Goddess of the consort is partially correct. I do agree with Shoum....that he is more advanced than others, however involuntary body movements do not come first....that occurs at a slightly later stage. Before the body movements, there will be a feeling of temperature changes in specific body areas, and a sensation of wind or a breeze in those areas. (the warm wind, or cool breeze will feel as if it is moving in a circular motion over the body part it is healing).
At later stages, the involuntary body movements will occur.
I'd also like to say that Radhakrishn, is correct in stating that without a teacher, there is a possibility of self harm.
And I don't understand the terms used by srianjali, however I have experienced the upwards flow, beginning at the perineum, moving to the top of the head. Every meditation held it's own reason for being, and no two were ever exactly the same.
Last of all, I'd like to say that I don't meditate anymore. I have found a better way to achieve enlightenment. Granted, I can hardly be taken as an authority on the subject of enlightenment, because I have not yet personally achieved that goal. However, I am much healthier.... body, mind and soul as a result of the new technology I've adopted as my own.
I have nothing against meditation, for I was a quick study, and within a mere few years I was rising strongly. (from here I could tangent off into the mind of the body, or the linking of the brain hemispheres, or unresolved beliefs, fears or whatnot), rather I will move on- to the topic of ego annihilation. This is not a good idea. The ego should be retained, trained and included in the human experience....always and in all ways. I'm not saying the ego itself won't be changed through the process, for it will be. (please understand that if you believe you need to lose your ego, you may).
Now, if you distrust this....I can ascertain, that I faltered when I was very near destroying my own ego via meditation...yes meditation can be a very powerful practice. Also, I 'd like to say that I know of another person, who went beyond enlightenment on to ascension, achieving what may seem to many as the impossible. During his own process of becoming, one of the people that was in his presence at the time, experienced ego shattering. He helped her rebuild her ego after-wards. My point is, that I know of two people who hit hard times via having their ego crumble.
So....meditate if you wish, but please maintain your ego in the process. This better way that I've mentioned has to do with Speakers. The people who were gifted with meta magic. Jesus the Christ was one of these in his time. Sunman is another in our time. The Speaker method is free of any dangers, there are no side affects, it does not require drugs, it is patient, and it leaves the process of how far you go at any one time up to you. (cleaner and purer than anything I've ever known).
Anyways, the most important symptom given by kundalini awakening, is the beautiful feeling your life will take on. You'll feel an obvious love and trust for all things, and everyone around you. People will be attracted to you, just because you're in that state, that state of grace. You will know, you exude love and light, because you will know you are loved. It's brilliant when you achieve it, and it's ever worth the trying.
Hey Great Ape...I don't know you....but you're ok in my book.
and to Asur...lol (in your face).
People didn't and probably still don't believe an ascended one walked through this unlikely place, called yahoo answers....but one did.
This is part of my testament.
Peace.

For me, I knew it had started when it felt like I had a flu at a funeral for three years and the doctors couldn't tell me what was wrong. This also initiated a bunch of realizations that led me to leave my partner of 8 years and my career plans which I could no longer deny I had chosen for other people, and not myself...Then my senses went ballistic...time felt funny. My senses changed. I can't explain it, but nothing feels the way it did, and yet it makes more sense than before almost...

The Great Awakening....
The world is overflowing with spin-masters, is it not so?
Ultimately one must find the "One" that causes all things, to rotate and spin!
One should not waste ones time searching for symptoms, one should utilize all of ones precious moments searching for "The Cause".
All of the signs that one will ever need are within the 'inner heart' of each human being.
That is precisely where the search for "The Cause" must begin.
~~~~~
Question:
Student - What are the symptoms of one becoming awakened?
Response:
Self-Realized Teacher - There are no so-called symptoms, there is only greater clarity. One will surely know when one is awakened. Any other questions?
~~~~~
*footnote - Just for the record: The odds of finding a "Fully Realized Master" to aid one in this quest is approximately, (one in one billion) - (1/1,000,000,000,000). What are the chances of one being successful? What are the repercussions if one is not successful? Time to evaluate the issue, would you not agree?
Peace be always with you.
in sha'Allah
al-hamdu lillah

When you forget the self, that is the symptom of Kundalini awakening. It seems that you have achieved this stage, hence the photo of a monkey as your introduction!

You will go through a lot of physicological and phisiological change. If you really interested then this should be done with the help of a guru to avoid any unwanted distress. This is because Kundalini is very powerful source for creation and should be respected as such
