What exactly is marijuana's effect on the brain?
I want knowledgeable people, not people who will tell me not to smoke, or feed me scare-tactics about it. I'm just curious and a little scared because this drug guy came to my school and said it can disrupt your brains building of neural passageways or something insane like that. I just started smoking recently and was wondering if it would have any long-term affects.

Let me tell you of the journey of cannabis.
It is inhaled. Our lungs is where we absorb oxygen from the air but they also absorb other chemicals, like from the joint when inhaled.
Once inhaled the cannabis chemical slip easily into the lungs then into the bloodstream.
The blood carries them from the lungs to the heart.
Almost immediately the blood vessel relax and dilate, allowing the blood to rush around the body.
The body starts to feel warm as access blood flows to skin.
It surges to tiny blood vessel in the eyes which turn red.
As the blood spread around the body, blood pressure start to drop. If it drops so low you can faint. "known as a whitey"
Within seconds of entering the bloodstream. The most powerful ingredient of cannabis delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) travels in the blood up the spine and into the brain.
One of the first effects is the buzz.
In the hour of smoking cannabis your risk of having a heart attack increases 5 fold. delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)in the blood has lowered the blood pressure. The heart senses this and starts beating faster and faster, increasing its speed up to 50%, which makes this really bad for a history of heart trouble.
Our body is hard wired for cannabis.
Our brain tell our body what to do by using our nervous system. This living communication network stretches from brain to the spine and through out our body. It allows us to hear, see the world around us.
When you smoke the joint, cannabis somehow penetrates the brain and hijack's the nervous system. like a herbal terrorist.
The human brain is composed of networks of billion f nerve cells.
Message passed from one cell to the next across narrow gaps.
Inside the gaps are tiny gates that control this flow of information, they are called receptors.
The delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) molecule penetrates the brain and seizes control of the receptor. Once it controls the receptors it controls how they works.
These receptors show in high amount of number in the brain that regulate our memory, apatite, thoughts and mood.
So its here where cannabis works its magic.
Deep inside the brain is the hippo campus this is the memory center. Surprisingly one of its main functions isn't to remember but to forget.
And the hippocampus has receptors that are vulnerable to get taken over by delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Almost immediately The delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) send messages telling your brain to forget, so its hard to make new long memories if you try while high.
But funny story because its hard to make new memories when you are high it enhances your creativity and problem solving skills, and verbal memory. Which is cool.
The hippocampus is where the brain stores information about every move we have ever made. We call upon this data base to work out how to achieve every day tasks. But delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the cannabis is interfering with the messages to and from the data base. So now the brain is unsure of what the body can or can't do. (people do stupid things)
The delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) also hijak's the part of the brain that controls balance. It can change a simple walk into a complex obstacle course.
There maybe a link with psychoses or paranoia. You can start feeling anxious or distrustful. The chemical in our brain makes us pay ore attention to our surrounding. delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) seems to increase the production of this chemical and this makes out brain into high alert. This can seem to make things more meaningful then they are.
In some people this can increase the amount of paranoia within an individual.
In fact 1/10 users can experience hallucination and this is believed to be genetic. So some users can become psychotic because of increases the vulnerability to being crazy.
YOU SHOULD NOT SMOKE IF YOU ARE LESS THAN 18. because it like Russian roulette you have a higher chance of being dependent a psychotic.
If you smoke in small amounts like once a week it should be fine. It is a unique plant that has the power to change our conscious. And can help medically as well.

It basically kills your brains cells, and you should know that you can never get more brain cells. But I know plenty of people that smoke and they are like the smartest people I know. I'm not going to tell you to stop, I mean it's your decision to do what you want.. But in my opinion, I would stop before you kill all of them. Hope I Helped:)

marijuana paralyzes brain cells it does not kill them however long term effects can be slower reaction time, lower mood, and and less determination.
