Substitute for a promise ring?

My boyfriend is going into the military so he can not wear any jewelry. We have been together for over 2 years and are planning on getting married after he returns. He is giving me his mom's promise ring a few weeks before he leaves. I want to give him something he can take with him that means the same thing, but I can not think of anything thats not a ring or other jewelry. Any ideas?

This may sound silly, but it is something he can always carry in his pocket so he can have it with him at all times. A coin. Go to a coin shop and buy a special coin. You would be amazed at the lovely coins you can buy. I am not talking pocket change here, I mean a nice coin that has value. It need not be hundreds of dollars as you can buy a nice Walking Liberty coin for under $30.00. I like this coin specifically because it pictures a vibrant confident woman with hope and wonder. Like you.

Can you get a promise ring but also buy a chain for it to hang off? That way he can hang it over the top of his bed? Or keep it in his bag? Can you make him something? Can he take everyday things with him? Buy him a nice pair of sunglasses or socks lol it doesnt have to be something expensive, just something he can take with him and know you got it for him is all that will matter.

Does he have dogtags? Do they all have to be the official ones of the military? Cause if possible, you might be able to get one engrave for him to put on the ones he has. :)
