Taking a gab year to declare residency?
My friend and are Oregon students who have been admitted to the University of Washington in Seattle and being Oregon students we have to pay the Out of state tuition (their is not discount for living on the North West, we checked). So we were considering taking a gap year in Seattle to declare residency in the state of Washington and we would then jump right into school with in-state tuition.
While I know taking a gap year may not be the best choice we feel it is the most effective choice considering our family's expenses and the out of state cost. We just want some pros and cons for our situation and what we should do.

It's a nice idea but, here's the big problem:
Students must prove conclusively that they have not come to Washington State primarily for educational purposes. See the link below. Here's some of the bigger issues:
1) Did your parents declare you as a dependent on their 2010 Income tax return? If they did; you will have to wait 2 years - Until 2013 to go to UW - You need to be financially independent for the (2012) current and the prior (2011) calendar year.
2) Employed - you need to be employed at least 30 hours a week. You two are proposing on moving to Seattle, getting jobs and waiting out the next two years in order to save how much money?
On the plus side, yes you are going to save money.
On the minus side, working at some menial job while your friends and contemporaries go to school is a huge drag. You won't be the only 20 year old freshman, but it will change your perspective on college and make it more likely you will not finish.
Why not go to the U of O?
Best of luck on your decision.
