Washington, USA, March 12, 2011 /WNCNews/ – People probably do not feel it, but the day is getting shorter after powerful earthquake that struck Japan on Friday (March 11, 2011).

Geophysical expert Richard Gross of NASA estimated that the earth rotation speed increases 1.6 microsecond. That’s because there was a shift of mass of the earth due to an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale that hit Japan. Microsecond is a unit of time for 1 per million seconds.

Changes in the Earth’s rotation speed is higher than which caused by the earthquake in Chile last year but lower than which caused by the earthquake of Sumatra in 2004 ago. In 2004, when devastating quake occurred, the shortening of the days as many as 6.8 microsecond occurred.

The terrible earthquake in Japan on Friday (March 11, 2011) is the fifth strongest earthquake since 1900.
