You WILL need a bleach.
DONT buy a box bleach because they typically dont come with enough bleach and typically arnt as good or as strong.
Use a 30 developer with a bleach from sallys.
Developer wise I recommend salon care since it's affordable and works great.
Bleach wise, I used loreal's quick blue, you can use any brand you'd like
Anyways, make sure your hair is as healthy/oily as it can be before you start.
The DAY BEFORE deep condition your hair. That way it's extra healthy/ready to bleach.
Dont wash it before you bleach it or anything, bleach and dyes ork better in hair when its "dirty".
Anyways apply the bleach using a tint brush, start at the BACK of your head, doing 1" pieces from bottom to about 1/2" away from your scalp/ leave your regrow uncovered.
After your head is covered go back and do the rest.
Put your hair in a shower cap (to help hold in heat, which will make it bleach faster)
Leave it in for about 20 minutes.
Rinse. Let dry. Your hair should be just hitting blonde, or around a redish color.
Deep condition it. rinse. let dry. DO NOT USE A BLOW DRYER! air dry ONLY.
After it's dry repeat this process. Now your hair should be a yellow blonde.Deep condition AGAIN to help with the heath of your hair.
next,
You'll need to tone it OR dye it.
I recommend using a dye or toner by wella.
Buy your dye from sally's. make sure it has a blue/violet base so it'll dye properly (most of them do, dont worry,)
and yeah after you dye it your hair should be the color you want (:

Scarlet_Air is right. I'm guessing you've used a box color, which is likely permanent. These are very difficult to strip at a professional level, let alone by yourself. If you try to do this at home you'll completely fry your hair, and you'll turn orange. Start slow and add all over highlights. Get a new set every few weeks. When your head is mostly blonde your stylist will color the rest blonde. A dark brown - to - blonde transition in one sitting will just leave you looking like a pumpkin. If it were your natural brown hair color it wouldn't be a problem, but dark box dyes are very hard to strip. If you choose to do it all in one sitting absolutely do not do it yourself. Also be prepared for 6 or more hours of bleaching and toning. You're going to need a few follow up appointments so you don't go brassy, too. You're not going to see perfect blonde after one appointment. You have to build up to it. Do your head a favor and see a pro.

If your hair has never been colored you can put a lighter shade and it will lift to the desired color. However, if you have colored your hair before then you will have to lighten (bleach) first. Either way i do not recommend a box color. If you dont have access to proffessional stores go to sallys. You can find better "over the counter" products. Hope this helps :)
