Who can list the most songs (with at least a few links) that contain "Indian" or "half breed" in the TITLE?
I would like to honor the people I can most relate to~~the Native Americans. Now some of you can call us Injuns and squaws (which basically means N.A. slutt) or murderers or b@stards or half breeds or whatever immature and degrading names come to your mind.... but instead of accusing the peoples of the many many tribes of Native American Indians of all of those nasty things, try considering the fact that we are all just human beings, regardless of nationality. And the things that happened durring those wars with "the white people" have long been overwith and most of us living today had absolutely nothing to do with those battles. Both whites and reds were guilty of slaughtering innocent people, and both were often put on the defending side of the battles. I'm not proud of the whites (my mothers side) or the reds (my Cherokee fathers side) that committed any horrific act for no reason. But for I do believe in fighting for what is right in our hearts.
My biological mother was ashamed that I was half Cherokee. To avoid being harassed and shamed by her family she gave me up for adoption. According to Native American ways a N.A. child was rarely ever given up out of the tribe. I was a half breed~and I was given up.
I would have liked to have known my blood relatives on my fathers side, but my birth was kept secret from my biological father.
I am grateful that I now have the most loving and supporting family I could ever have dreamed for. But sometimes I wish I could have been raised on a reservation. If you haven't been there you won't understand. But I'm proud of my heritage, even though my biological mother was not.
MQ Will you please list some songs about Indians (any tribe) ?
** You can bash and criticize all you want, but I will never deny my blood**

now I would like to give you something a native elder had given to me many years ago to help out native gang members, behind bars. To help them see clearly.
The following is an Ojibway story told to me by an Elder, a story I try to pass on to young native inmates. This is a story that most native inmates say has helped them to understand themselves and helps them to seek a better life.
"You have a twin brother whom you have wondered about
and whom you would seek. This I tell you; he is your other
side in all things and in all ways. He is with you....do not seek him. Do not wish to know him, but understand him.
You will walk the path of peace....he would not
You are kind....he is not
You are humble...he is not
You are generous...he is not
You seek the good in things....he does not
You shall respect others...he will not
You shall seek the goodness in others...he will not
You are the light....he is the darkness.
Know that he is with you, understand him, but do not seek him!"
This is the story of the good and bad in all of us. If we seek the bad twin within us, that is what comes out. If we seek the good within us, then that is what we are.
take care

The Navajo Know, The Pixies

Iroquois Lane, Amanda Overmeyer (one of the better American Idol contestants):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwOgF-1nI6o
(does not actually have to do with the Iroquois, but is a good song nevertheless)
Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn), Bob Dylan. Here's the Hollies' cover. as you've probably heard the Mannfred Mann cover:

Back with more.
BQ: As far as I know, no, not even a sliver, but that's because I am from two very cloistered ethnicities who didn't even marry outside of their own ethnicities -- the fact that my parents were getting married to each other, and both are Anglo-Saxon white, was a big deal to both sides of the families.
BBQ: However, I did take 'Intro to Iroquois Language' in college and work on an Iroquois digsite for a college archaeology. I still remember how to speak a few words, and I live near -- and used to volunteer at -- the Iroquois museum. One of my law school papers was on Native land rights and the way those rights are decimated by incorrect application of property laws: If you're interested, Missy, drop me an E-mail and _if_ I can dig it up, I will send it to you.
(I'll also echo Stella's comments. You have nothing to apologize for, obviously, and I wish that could be left unsaid. Racism is vile and indefensible, and I truly hope that in the next 100 years, the lines between our artificially constructed "races" will blur so much that we'll largely be indistinguishable from each other. It's an old saying by now, but people should be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character -- MLK definitely had the right idea.)

Hi Missy. Don't ever apologize for your heritage. If anything, you should be apologized to. What this country has done to the Native American is short of...horrendous!
Peace Frog - the Doors
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X34JarNjoIU
"Indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind"
MQ: I don't think so although I am French-Canadian and always thought most of us might have a drop or two.
MQ2: Don't know but I'm gonna check my heritage book tonight!
Missy, this is for you. A great performance from the great, Robbie Robertson (he's part Mohawk) and he did a cd of Native American music. Enjoy ;)

Indian Reservation by Paul Raviere And The Raiders

My top pick would be "One Nation Under" by the Amazing Dinè (Navajo) band Blackfire.

Then There's "American Ghost Dance" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Anthony Kiedis claims to have some Mohawk blood, but the song mainly references Lakota and Paiute history.
