What is a good site for looking up names by definition?

I'm writing a book about my life and some of the people in it do not want their real names published in it. I don't want to just slap a random name on each person. The name has to mean something specific to either me or them. The people I am renaming are teachers, friends, family and rivals of mine. I need names with positive meanings for my loved ones and names with negative meanings for my enemies. I have about 100 people to rename.

I can find plenty of sites where I can type in a name and get the definition. That isn't what I am looking for. I need a site were I can type in a definition and find a name or type in a name and get another name that's a synonym for it. Thank you for your help in advance!

You can go into "Search", then click the "Advanced" tab. From there, you can narrow down results by gender, origin, and even length. Most importantly, you can also add in what words you want the name meaning to include. I use it all the time when I'm creating new characters!

Try Having a Look in the Oxford Book of Names this BOOK covers Place , Surname and Given names. The Internet is a wonderful tool to use in your research, but some times you cannot beat a book.

You can always type in "baby girl name meanings" or "baby boy name meanings" into Google but my personal favorite free website is www.babyhold.com It is made to be a parenting website but they have over 100,000 names on there with meanings and can be sorted by origin, race, culture and gender. They also have section for unisex names.

Google is your best shot. Simply use keywords such as, "Names meaning flower," and etc....

    You'll have plenty of hits.

I also suggest you look up certain cultures when looking for a specific meaning. For example, Native American names are more spiritual, while Latin/Greek names are more "war-status" with meanings such as "brilliant" or "warrior".

Here is a great site that you can look up names using definitions, first letter, and country.
