It's just Medicare, which pays 80% of the bill after the $600/yr deductible is met.

You'll need "Medi-Gap" insurance to pay the other 20%. You may be eligible for Medicaid (Medi-Cal in CA).

You will also need Medicare Part D, prescription coverage. If you get Medicaid, it will cover your Part D premiums, so you'll get all your medications for free.

Basically, if you get Medicaid along with Medicare, you're 100% covered.

You won't be eligible for Medicare until you've been receiving SSDI for 2 years. You may be eligible for straight Medicaid in the interim.

First off, Social Security Disability has no health benefits. They qualify you for Medicare (federal) or Medicaid (state) if you are approved. If you are approved for SSDI, there is a 2 year wait for Medicare. During that time if your income is limited, and have few assets, you might qualify for Medicaid. If you are approved for SSI, you are automatically qualified for Medicaid.

Medicaid is state administrated. Fewer Doctors are accepting new patients because of time it takes to get compensated by the state. Some states have better Medicaid programs tha others, so it depend on which state you live in. Medicare, only covers a certain amount of costs, and generally requires a private insurance supplement, plus a monthly payment.

You have to be approved to receive SSDI disability benefits which are based on your disabiilty and how much you have contributed through payroll taxes. It can take a few months to a few years to win your case. If you are approved, you have to wait 24 months from your disability date to get Medicare, but if the changes currently being discussed go into effect, you may only get the voucher.
