Who are politics for? Do they have anything at all to do with the common good?

I'm not a naive kid. I learned a long time ago that "All men are created equal" doesn't really apply to all people, or even all men, in the U.S. or around the world. And, Nixon taught me that presidents aren't saints.

But, over the past 30 years or so I've seen the rich get richer and fewer while the poor get poorer and more numerous and the great American middle class slowly disappear.

What's the end game?

Do we really have to go through another total economic crash, another Great Depression, another series of class wars where the poor rise up against the rich?

Why?

Why can't we put the Monopoly game back in the box and then put that box in the trash can?

If we're to survive long term as a species, won't we eventually have to start thinking and acting like one?

Why not start now?

Or are we just too stupid and greedy to live?

Aside from some basic class warfare platitudes you really haven't proposed much here to work with. I will simply say this - Do you think it is a coincidence that the most prolific period of technological, economic, a social progress and well being coincides with the last 200 years when markets were freed to give all people access instead of legally ensconced aristocrats? The "rich" aren't even the same people as 50 years ago. Their rolls are changing all the time.

Plus your claim that the rich get richer and poor get poorer is fallacious. The recent recession notwithstanding the rich get richer and the poor ALSO get richer is a more accurate description of capitalism. The common statistic used to support the poor getting poorer claim is the income gap. But when you look at the PPP of the poor in a capitalist society, it rises...it simply rises less quickly than the rich. But it rises faster than the poor in ANY other system. Socialism, even Democratic Socialism, produces stagnant PPP over time.

As Gordon Gecko said, Greed is Good. Greed is why the farmer gets up at the crack of dawn to make food that he nor his family will eve consume. Greed motivates us to be productive, contributing members of society. To date, no other force has motivated man to do so.
