Is it better to drive the Oregon coast north to south or south to north or is there no advantage either way?
Wondering about traffic and views.
Astoria in the north or Bandon in the south would be just as easy to get to as a starting point for us. Not having driven the coast, I wasn't sure if there was any advantage to either. I understand that bikers prefer traveling from the north to the south due to the prevailing winds from the north, so maybe driving from the south to the north would reduce the issue of dealing with bicycles and riders? Or if more people tended to start from Portland and Astoria, is the traffic lighter heading northward? Or if more traffic comes up from California, maybe the traffic is lighter heading southward?

As far as weather, visibility, lighting, sights, order of cities, hill slope, etc. there is no significant advantage to one direction over the other. Bicycles are as close to a non-issue as can be: there just aren't that many, and they are more concerned about being away from vehicles than you are about being away from them.
All that comes to mind is that most (80% to 90%) of the scenic overlook parking areas are on the ocean side of the road. By going north to south, one would not have to cross the highway for entering a pullout or reentering the highway.

If you go from south to north it would probably be easier to see Heceta Head and stuff like that, but either way, there are a lot of turn outs for sightseeing.
