Is power steering flush or fuel injector cleaning beneficial?
At my last oil change, the service advisor recommended a power steering fluid flush and fuel injector cleaning. I have a 2007 Scion tC with about 45k miles.
From the research I've done, it doesn't sound like I really need either of these services. If the power steering fluid really is dirty then I should be able to replace the fluid myself. I've tracked my car's MPG since I bought it and I haven't noticed any decrease, so I'm guessing my fuel injectors can't be all that dirty.
Is my reasoning sound, or is there some legitimate reason I should be getting either of these services?

Answering your questions properly is a little complex.
Fuel Injection cleaning is a name that has taken on a different meaning. When FI started to appear on cars the injectors were all Bosch design and they stopped up quite a bit even on new cars, however since injector design changed to accommodate the alcohol in fuel the injectors themselves do not get dirty that much.
What FI cleaning has become today is more of an air intake, valve deposit, throttle body, fuel line cleaning and that is still needed on some low mileage vehicles but NOT all. There are several makes that are prone to develop deposits such as carbon and gum / varnish...yours is not one of them.
Power steering flushing is a good preventative maintenance item to reduce wear on the rack & pinion from dirty fluid. The fluid gets dirty from the internal component wear inside the rack & pinion. Your car may be ready for this service however flushing with a PS Flush machine on your car would not be needed. A simple drain the reservoir and replace a few times will probably suffice. When the fluid has not been changed in about 100k miles that is when a PS flush machine and cleaning additives are needed.

Fuel injector cleaner is a good thing. If you don't get them cleaned then when they get stopped up you will wish that you should of got some. You can buy it at any auto parts store. Put it in the gas tank and roll on. That is all you do.
If you are going to flush the power steering fluid yourself you will need some tools. Look for some Metric tools. I think new cars have metric bolts on them: 8.8 or 9. something.
Good luck

If he fuel injectors are dirty you can buy a 3M or a petrol tank cleaning fluid at some gas stations.pour it into your tank and it will clean the whole fuel sytem and will boost your car in result. If the power steering is harder to turn then just pour some power steering fluid and it should be fine!

all the cars i had over the years i never flushed the power steering and i never had any trouble. as for the fuel injection cleaning just keep putting fuel injection cleaner in the tank once in a great while and it will keep them clean. sounds like he was trying to get some extra money.

Is the engine running badly? Or the power steering faulty? No?
I think they are trying to scare you into buying something you don't need. After all, how would you notice the difference afterwards?
Might be worth emailing or ringing your manufacturer and asking them what they think. If you email them, print out their reply.
The power steering fluid is usually in a little bottle in the engine compartment.
Buy yourself a Haynes service manual (also see what it says about what the garage suggested). You can do small jobs like that, or changing wiper blades yourself.

not with 45k miles you dont, watch out for those lube and screw places, they make fortunes for rich corparate a holes who do not care they are ripping people off. as far as your fuel injection I personally would switch to chevron unleaded, it has techron it is good clean gas, techron is a fuel system cleaner, do not use cheap gas, it has chemicals and water often times, and is not good for new fuel injected vehicles. chevron will help keep the injection system clean, and if its clean, it does not need a service.
as far as your car goes, it has enough sensors to tell you when there is a problem, so do not listen to the oil change place, and I suggest you find another one, because new cars do not need this service. good luck dont go back there, and tell your friends.

Hi
Watch them. Always ask for your old parts. It keeps them honest.
