PLEASE help me with vegan shopping?

want to start eating vegan because I'm tired of the way I feel and just for a better lifestyle. problem is i don't know anyone who's vegan and feel very overwhelmed @ the grocery store figuring out what I can and can't buy. I live in a small town with the nearest whole foods over two hours away so if anyone could be a friend and help I would greatly appreciate it

Instead of worrying about having lots of fancy types of tofu, stock up on dried grains, beans and lentils to get your started. try vegweb.com and get yourself a week worth of recipes before you go shopping, have a list in your head. There is LOTS you can have for breakfast and lunch that is totally vegan without worrying. Breakfast could be cereal with vegan milk, toast with hummus or guacamole or peanut butter (try cashew butter too its gorgeous), vegan marg and jam/jelly, or a tofu scrambled. Lunch could just be pasta or greek salads, again sandwiches, there is lots you can try without really making a huge effort that is fairly nutritious. Stick to wholegrain pasta, rice and bread where you can, and use beans and lentils to bulk up...buying them dry is cheaper and they are less likely to cause you gas issues. Your local supermarket is likely to have some sort of tofu also.

Also, try googling to see if you have any online health stores that will deliver to you...there should be plenty of options.

Focus on less processed foods and you'll have less problems with ingredient reading and the like, and you'll also get lots more nutrition! Join an online veggie forum and find some supportive people too!

Hello! Congrats for going vegan!! It's one of the best choices I have made for myself. Some vegans eat a lot of mock meats but I believe in whole foods as our base. I founded the vegan lifestyle website www.veganconsultant.com because I love the vegan lifestyle so much! Here are some tips to get you started:

Breakfast: Try a green smoothie. Gives you a lot of energy, healthy & yummy! This is how I make my green smoothies http://www.veganconsultant.com/2011/02/green-smoot...

Lunch: Hummus wraps with fresh veggies makes for a great protein packed lunch.

Dinner: I love a large green salad with lots of veggies with quinoa or sweet potato

Let me know if this helps! ~ Kelly

Hi. What do you currently eat for your breakfast, lunch and dinner? For breakfast you could try cereal, toast, wholegrain pancakes, or bagels. You can have these with soy margarine, and soy milk with the cereal. After a while, the soy milk doesn't taste bad (I'm being honest!). You will adjust.

You could buy many tins of soup, pasta (with a sauce), bread with salad (for sandwiches), etc. Each meal should have a base of wholegrains. For snacks, you could consume fruit, or nuts (in small amounts). You could also buy tins of beans, as beans are an excellent source of protein.

At the market/grocery (but preferably a farmer's market, though I don't have any real ones near me either) just pick up a carton of rice/soy/almond milk, but if you can't find any then you can make your own.

Also be sure to buy seasonal fresh fruits and veggies, not too many though. You don't want them to lose all their nutritious yumminess before you eat them. Stock up on raw, unsalted, salted, roasted (raw is the most handy though) nuts. Cashews, almonds, pecans, walnuts are the most common. And you can't forget seeds. Sunflower, flax (definitely stock up on whole flax seeds. They can be used in place of eggs when baking.), pumpkin seeds. Dry and canned beans are also very useful. Don't forget various rices. Jasmine, sushi rice, basmati, brown, white, all are good.

If there's anything you can't find at the store, you can always find it online.

[Edit] By the way, you don't need tofu. Of course, it's nice to have. But you can also make your own tofu, tempeh, and seitan.

Stock up on beans, lentils, soya and wholegrains. Cereal, pasta, rice, tofu, marmite and herbs and spices. You can buy fresh fruit and vegetables weekly.
