Writers: Character description contest (describe your character)?
So, most of us tend to not describe our characters' appearance too much. Usually because we like to allow the reader to come up with the picture they like. But do you guys have clear images of your characters in your own head? Do their appearances have anything to do with their personality/role? Describe your character in as detailed a manner possible. Include stuff like
Manner of dress
Manner of speech
Height/build
Expressions
Manner of stride
Etc
Go. (Lol)

Again, I don't put names on here because I am a crazy person. So, this is my male MC, 'R'.
R is non-human, and a race which I think is unique to my story (well, I made it up and I can't find anything identical to them on the internet). For the majority of the book he remains human in appearance, as his species use a type of magic to cover their non-human features. He has wings, but not 'angel wings' as such. They look more like an eagle's and are pale brown in colour, but he rarely flies as it wears him out. For most of the time he actually has them strapped to his back in case he tries to fly when drunk. His species have four arms (they're basically what I have as my display picture) which is a redundant evolutionary trait (I won't bother going into all that), and the 'second pair' is basically used to help stabilize them in flight. The species generally cannot perform intricate tasks like writing with these arms, and R is no exception to this rule.
He doesn't know his own age, but he is ninteen years old at the beginning of the story and twenty towards the end.
He is about six foot tall, which is actually relatively short for his species. He is certainly shorter than most of the adult males who are generally around six foot four. He is slender - but again, this is usual for his species. I know it is not realistic in the slightest having a humanoid race which can fly, but if they were large it would be even more stupid. As R often does not eat, he is unhealthily thin even for the standards of his own species. He is an alcoholic and would rather use his money for alcohol and cigarettes than food, which has obviously made him incredibly unhealthy. Because of his massive unhealthiness, he often walks quite slowly as to not wear himself out, although he can fly or run fast in short bursts. As he is drunk most of the time, he obviously wobbles around a lot when moving, but as he is 'used to' being drunk, in a way he is not as bad as he should be when it comes to 'walking in a straight line'.
I see his appearance as being one that has 'faded' over a short space of time. He was a 'good-looking' young teenager, but five years of sleeping on the streets and four years of substance abuse have completely ruined him. He has very messy dark-blonde, almost-shoulder-length hair due to not really bothering to getting it cut in four years. He is exceptionally pale skinned like the rest of his species, which live underground. They are not 'vampires' or anything - there is no sun underground (derp) so they are very pale because of this. He has red patches of skin on his shoulders, neck and arms because his skin easily burns. He has grey eyes but I don't think I mention this at all in the story, and he has dozens of transdermal piercings. This is usual for his species and is based on a religious practice. They are in patterns on his arms and face, but cannot be seen when he is in his, to put it simply, 'human disguise'. He is missing his index finger on his right hand, but he has no idea how. Reason: he got in a bad fight when drunk and a similarly drunk guy slammed his hand in a door. Hard. It's probably for the best that he doesn't remember it. He always looks scruffy, and because of this the first impressions others get of him are not great.
As he is part of a non-human species who had not lived among humans for most of his life, English is not his first language. When he is introduced near the beginning of the story, he had been living amongst humans for around five years, but had never formally been taught English. Resultingly, he speaks broken English. He has a large vocabulary as he picks up words quickly after they are explained, but has a hard time learning the rules of English as they differ so greatly to those of his first language (a make believe language I created for the story) and mainly speaks in the present tense unless explicitly corrected by another character. He also has problems using personal pronouns as his language does not have 'gender' oriented pronouns, so he often uses 'they' in the place of 'he' or 'she'. Despite being not fluent in English and sounding - to an extent - awkward and shy while using it, he is very expressive and well-spoken in his own language. He has a strong 'his race' accent, and his speech is slurred when he is drunk.
Normally, his species wear simple 'cloak'-like clothing with lots of jewellery. Obviously he can't do this amongst humans without seeming strange, so he was given average looking 'human' clothes (he cut holes in the tops). When he entered England, he had never seen aggressive advertising campaigns before. Like many others who traveled 'here', he ended up spending a lot of money on pointless items he didn't need. The majority of the things he bought were designer clothes...
Source(s): Because of this, he generally wears a bizarre assortment of expensive clothes that look just about acceptable enough for him to be unnoticed. Obviously his clothes are often torn and scruffy because of sleeping on the streets. I often picture him wearing a mismatched range of 'Superdry', 'Bench' and 'Jack Wills' clothing, but obviously I don't mention this. In the book he is nearly always smoking and/or drinking because it 'calms him'. When he is not, he is always doing something with his hands, mostly playing with his lighter. Perhaps somewhat stereotypically, he refuses to admit he has a problem and suggests that it is not harming him because he is not human. However, it patently is. He reeks of tobacco, which really annoys the other characters. I wrote too much. Meh. - ElkPassingByLv 41 decade ago
Name: Frogbert L. Hudson

Talents/Skills/Powers: Can change his height from the height of a normal frog to 6 feet.
Height: 2 inches up to 6 feet.

Posture/Manner of Stride: Frogbert stands with his back arched and chin high. He hops with confidence and class.
Build: Heavy
Skin: Greenish and lumpy.
Eyes: Yellowish
Expressions: Frogbert is not very expressive. Frowns and smiles can only be detected by the eyes, perhaps a slight crease between where the eyebrows would be if he had any, or the corners of the mouth. He avoids laughing because it makes dogs bark and scares kitties as well as anyone else in the room.
Hands: Webbed with widespread fingers and ball-shaped fingertips.
Feet: His feet are merely longer versions of his hands with fingers closer together.
Glasses/Contacts? Normally he wears contacts, but he does have a pair of thin black framed reading spectacles.
Left/Right handed? Right handed.
Distinguishing features: He wears tuxedos everywhere and often stands at six feet and is a talking frog. Everything about him is pretty distinguishing.
Who does s/he take after; mother or father? Father. His mother was a skinny little thing.
Manner of dress: Elegant, high class and perhaps a bit snobby looking although it isn't intended that way.
How does s/he dress or what do they typically wear? Tuxedos.
Other outfits one might find in their wardrobe: A completely black tuxedo with a red tie for funerals, a normal black and white tux for everyday occasion, an old out of fashion blue tux with a black bow tie, two pairs of long white gloves, several top hats, all black but with different colored ribbons on them, a collection of canes with large pretty and expensive gems on them.

Are they generally balanced or clumsy? Balanced but slow.
Mannerisms/Poses/Movement: Slow but always has his head high and carries a cane.
Manner of speech: Short and to the point.
Unique phrases/words: Kaima instead of friend, often uses similies such as "like a fox person", and when he means to say someone is a good dancer he calls them cloven. He was born on a different planet, so don't blame him.
Do they curse, and if so, to what extent? Only in Dutch if nobody who can speak Dutch is in the room. He will make awful rumbling noises otherwise.
Voice: Deep.
Describe their laugh: Loud, deep, and bellowing, might make the weak hearted pee themselves.

I agree that she's just jealous, and she is because she is scared to have competition at her hands. And if she said that stuff to people about you not being a good writer, then why are you even friends with her? Friends don't do that to each other, and if she can't say that to your face then who needs her. She's the one who is being rude. Even if none of your other friends don't write, tell them about your stories or better yet let them read it. My best friend did somewhat of the same thing to me, and now I don't consider her that much of a friend anymore. It's sad but why should I have to deal with someone who always wants to be a step ahead of me no matter what it is?

Lol. I'm not so sure I agree with the fact that people on here often neglect to describe their characters. A whooole lot of the stuff I read on here is chock-full of odes to the exact color of their heroine's orb-like eyes, or the precise way her golden locks tumble in a waterfall of luscious perfection to her mid-back. But I will agree that it's good to have a clear mental image, if only for personal purposes. Here goes mine:
Girl (named Chelsea for now, but that could change):
Dress - Casually trendy, jeans-and-a-cute-top kinda girl
Speech - Typically teenaged
Height/build - About 5'9", a bit overweight (and insecure about it)
Hair - Black, very curly, usually a big frizzball held back by a hairband.
Eyes - Blue
Skin - tan
Personality - Not very defined yet. I'm still figuring out who Chelsea is.
Boy - Harrison:
Dress - Laidback, very plain
Speech - Grew up (and died) in the 60's, so he uses a lot of slang, some of which is outdated
Height - Same as Chelsea, but without the crazy hair, so he looks shorter
Build - Skinny to the point of looking emaciated
Hair - Brown, lank, thinning, a bit grayish
Eyes - Brown, kind of sunken-looking
Skin - very pasty, sallow
Stride - Sort of skulking, walks with a bit of a limp, broke his leg in the accident that killed him and it never quite healed (Note: he's a zombie)
Personality - Bitter about the fact he can't die, feels like a burden on his parents, used to be optimistic, cheery and a bit arrogant in life, but now he's morose and kind of an @sshole.

Her lips are thin and pink.

Very intelligent. Uses "big" words in speech.
Noah
Scruffy black hair he tends to shake a lot with his hand.
Eyes are dark blue. Also almond shaped.
Small rounded nose.

Wears dark clothing. It shows he isn't very outgoing, which he isn't. He ignores what people think about him.
He talks like a normal teenage guy. He's quiet, and doesn't socialize much, so his vocabulary can sometimes be more than what is expected.
Hes average height, maybe slightly shorter. He's taller than most girls, though.
Almost all the time, he isn't smiling. He has a bored look on his face, normally.
He has swagger, but not as much as, like, a black guy. Haha, no offense. :)
BTW, his name is Xavier.

The world was to big for him. He looked up at everyone, in utter distaste, how would he compete with the tall muscular men when when he was short and flimsy. He was always treated like a little child, because his features made him look younger. Once a woman asked him who his mommy was. This was scarring for a man of 17, and he wished that God had not given him such a horrible lot. He always got picked on by his cousin who was 2 years older than him, and at his mother's high teas he was expected to sit through the pain of another old lady remarking on how old he was getting, or asking "how old is little Edward now." His father though he was a huge disappointment, to the family. May was his love, but he knew he was much to boyish for her. He was sullen, and brooding how come his cousin got the girl if he was taller she might have gone out with him. he eat foods to make him taller, but it was no use. this was his curse, not only was he short he had a short temper, and he allowed himself, to indulge it whenever he was alone, but today he grabbed a knife, and decided it was quite enough, he hated living in a gentrified society that cared about looks more that who he was. He was crying and hoped no one would come in. He felt the cool blade across his kneck, and watched the red stain flowing out with a facination. The door opened, and his cousin walked in. Laughing, and then stopped his eyes looked in horror, "Edward what have you done."
he grabbed his suit and tried to quell the bleed. " I'm only saving everyone the trouble. I though you'd be happy. You never liked me." his voice faint, and his eyes drifting out and in of focus. "I only hated you, because Mary Liked you better. You didn't know? why do you think I talked to her every second I didn't want you alone with her. I was jelious."
"What I didn't know I was to focused on little things to notice, Help me I don't want to die"
"Help, help!" "Eddie, Eddie! God oh God help me he is dead "

Some of it might seem kind of strange, but it takes place in a different world. Think forests, deserts, no technology, wood/straw buildings, living off the land type of thing.
Emrys has brown, messy hair that ends just above the base of his neck; although the hair at the side of his ears ends at the bottom of his ears. He doesn't really care for his hair that much, he just cuts it himself once a month or so with a knife. It's not all that greasy, but he only washes it once or twice a week - washing hair isn't really all that important in his world.
His eyes are brown like his hair; he likes them. They're about normal shape; oval, just a little slimmer. He got his eye colour off his mother, but he only knows that because his father told him. As for the rest of his facial features; a slightly smaller nose and his lips are quite thin. His ears are larger than normal and he hates them. He's clean shaven because he hates the stubbly feeling that you get from not shaving. He's about 6ft 2inches. He's bigger than his dad, but not as muscly. He's rather slender, but he's strong which he gets from helping his dad on the farm.
His clothes aren't anything special. Just a pair of black, fur-lined boots, a pair of loose brown trousers that are quite light and a black t-shirt. In winter, he wears a fur-lined jacket to keep warm when working outside, as well as a scarf his dad made him from their goats fur and a pair of gloves made of sheep skin. They don't really have underwear in his world. He used to have a hat, but it got torn a lot - he's been meaning to fix it.
Emrys is more of a doer than he is a thinker. He would much rather just jump straight into something than think it through, which is why he likes helping his dad so much. That's not to say he doesn't think though. He often spaces out and stares out into nowhere; playing with a blade of grass, a knife or something similar like that. He likes to stick his tongue out every so often when he's trying to do something difficult though. As for quirks, he picks the skin around his finger nails a lot and he also bites at his lips which makes them bleed. He doesn't mind though. He doesn't mind getting messy - in fact, he much prefers that to getting clean.

Well long nails are attractive... but to make it look sexy, put red nail gloss on.... now thats attractive hun!

Women who else have nicely manicured long nails, regardless of whether they are natural or not will always get my approval. My spouse has long nails and it can make her hands look sexy and feminine.
