No it's minimal at best.AVG Free is about the best there is and it's free.

Windows Defender protects spyware from entering your system. A better free alternative is Microsoft Security Essentials. If you visit a lot of insecure websites, Malwarebytes, the paid version, is better.

Windows Defender is a standalone antispyware product, it does not offer protection against viruses.
If you want an antivirus protection, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free

I never use it. But then again I use Microsoft Security Essentials so what do I know. It will turn off Windows Defender if you install it. Most other 3rd party software probably will too. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
