Middle East: First start in WWII. Germany attempted to push through the Caucasus mountains in southern Russia into the oil fields in Iran. The Soviets and British (operating from Palestine) moved into Iran and Iraq to keep the reserves for their militaries. Once the war was over, The Soviets had a strength in the region. They also owned Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. When Israel was created in 1948, there was no more British presence there. This gave the soviets complete domination over the area.

The next major thing to happen in the Middle East was the failed invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union. Troops were deployed to support the puppet government in Afghanistan, which was supported by the Soviet Union, beginning on December 24, 1979, and were withdrawn by February 15, 1989. The Mujahadeen fighters, which were ironically supported by the CIA, using guerilla tactics, were able to fend off the Russians. Occasionally incursions were made into Pakistan.

Latin America: Most famously, after the Cuban Revolution (which resulted in the overthrowing of U.S.-backed leader Fulgencio Batista), which started on July 26, 1953 (led by Fidel Castro), and ended on January 1, 1959, the now Communist Cuba received support from the Soviet Union. We all remember the Cuban Missile crisis, which lasted between October and November 1962. The Soviet Union sent missiles to bases in Cuba, which were detected by the American U2 Spyplane. After Pres. Kennedy called in every single ship in the U.S. Navy to quarantine Cuba, the Soviets promised to remove their missiles. The U.S. subsequently removed its missiles from Italy and Turkey.

The U.S. military directly funded, armed, and trained the army of Guatemala.

The U.S. also invaded Panama in 1989 to re-establish democracy under operation Just Cause. They achieved success.

The U.S. had bases in Honduras when they were fighting the Nicaraguan government and supporting the Contra guerillas in the 1980s

Obviously the list goes on and on but those are a few. :)
