Justifying Islamic rules by saying it doesn't apply to today's society?

So I hear people justifying things in Islam by saying 'Oh it only applied to the Prophet's (pbuh) time and doesn't apply to today's society anymore' How does that even make sense? Islam is a logical and perfected religion and consequently should apply to EVERY kind of society no matter how far in the future it is. What kind of religion would Islam be if it only applied to only a specific period in time? Do you agree/disagree? OR are there actually things that 'only applied to the Prophet's time'?

Islam is universal and timeless but the prophet Muhammad (saaws) wasn't. God specifically chose to convey his message through a man like ourselves who needs to eat and drink and who marries and works and dies, etc. and who is part of a specific society and culture. However some people have extended the timelessness and universality of Islam to encompass the prophet and his companions' practices, forgetting or ignoring the fact that they were subject to their cultures much as we are to ours, whereas since they were human beings, not everything they did or said was a religious decree or rule. (I'm referring to Sunnism/Salafism/Wahhabism for the most part)

In the Quran too, some things need to be seen in context and don't apply in all cases. For example does the verse that says not to approach prayer while drunk mean we can get drunk otherwise, or is that a temporary rule that only applied in a specific context and is now further regulated in surat Al-Ma'idah verse 90-91. Same goes with certain verses that were revealed in relation to specific battles, etc.

There's nothing wrong with diversity... Religious rules apply at all times and in all places, but non-religious ones (though closely related to what we consider "religious figures") don't always apply, and don't (shouldn't) form part of our religion or belief system in my opinion.

An example would help though. "It depends" is my answer.

I do agree that Islam wasn't brought to us for a specific period of time. There are many things that we can do today that people did in the time of the Prophet (pbuh), but there are things like riding a camel for example, Im not trying to sound rude but i dont think that we would be allowed to ride camels here in the western countries. Dont get me wrong I mean when i went back home I saw people still using camels, and Alhumdullilah it is actually really nice.I think that life in the prophets time must have been beautiful. Everyting was so natural so simple, and now its like technology is taking over the world its not a bad thing up to a certain point though.

Kinda got off topic but yeahh thats my thoughts :)

    Salam

Partially agree. The Prophet (Pbuh) also told us to follow the laws of the land, where we're in. If you were to follow Islam, as it was followed, back in the Prophet's time now. You'd be kicked out of your countries.

Like the bible, and other holy books, one should get rid of things that shouldn't apply in today's age. People must realize that these books were written by Men when men ruled and women were submissive. Not so much these days.

Well all the laws of Islam is based on ancient Arabic traditions..

Stoning women to death, cutting off the hands of thieves etc, etc, are all ancient Eastern laws and has no place in today's society. Agreed?

If it's in the Qu'ran you follow it no matter what.

If it is a reliable hadith, then follow it.

People have a way of trying to change things to better fit theirs wants/views. Follow Allah and Muhammed and you should be fine.

The issue I have with altering those practices is that there is no proof of exceptions and without that you may be doing wrong. Reminds me of the women travelling without a mahram issue. I still wouldn't consider that ok in this day and age and we are simply told not to, we weren't told something like "If you feel safe you can travel by yourself," rather we are told to not travel with a mahram.

    Salam Ulakim,

Agree and Disagree. There are some instances that don't apply to this time such as things about slavery. Everything else does apply to this time.
