It's a very famous picture--one of the most famous in the world--but I don't believe that it is the epitome of his art. "The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" seems to me a greater painting, with some of the same elements as La Joconde. Presumably, Leonardo daVinci was working from life and the portrait may have been commissioned, so he couldn't change such a detail.
