What is the road like from San Francisco to Point Reyes?

I am thinking about driving from San Jose to Marshall and I can go through Mill Valley or I can go along the coast. Is it a difficult drive? Is it along cliffs like Highway 1 south of Carmel, or is it flat and winding?

I prefer to take 101 to Larkspur and then take Sir Francis Drake Blvd. to Pt. Reyes. When you hit Highway 1, head north to Marshall.

Highway 1 between Sausilito and Pt. Reyes is very slow and windy, although it is very scenic.

Coastal drive is not bad and it's not difficult but not exactly a freeway so you must have enough time for a leisurely drive (depending on how you drive & the type of car you have) because it is not that easy to pass slower moving cars along that road. It's good if you have a motorcycle.

We like to drive over to Marin for cheese. From SF, we take 101 to the town of Novato where we take the Rowland turnoff and then go west to Novato Blvd. Head north to the end of Novato Blvd. and you'll end up at the Petaluma Pt. Reyes Rd. Go west, you'll pass a fire station and then next door is the Marin Cheese Factory. If you continue past heading west, you'll reach Pt. Reyes. I think for Marshall, you'll be driving a few miles north along Hwy 1. This route would be through rolling hills & pastureland. It's not exactly a freeway, either, but good for a pleasant drive.

I never heard of Marshall and I live in the same county where Pt Reyes is. You have to cross the GG Bridge and then pick up Hwy 101 then if you want to drive thru Mill Valley to Stinson Beach, then pick up Hwy 1 but you dont have to go that way. But I wouldnt go to Pt Reyes that way. I would take 101 to Petaluma, take the road going to Bodega Bay and turn off to Pt Reyes. You can map it.

Very winding, sometimes high cliffs. If you have the time it might be nice drive.
