Why is one earbud quiter then the other?

OK! So I have a first generation Ipod touch. For some reason my left ear bud was quieter then the other one so I decided to replace the headphones. After doing so I still have the same problem with them. Does anyone know how to fix this? I tried going into the settings but I don't see a way of adjusting the equalizer at all so im stumped.

Also please no obvious answers like using the warranty or anything like that on them. And no cracks on how crappy apple products are blah blah. Just looking for a straight answer.

Thanks!

Update:

ok Im not stupid and I know they are plugged in all the way. Also im convinced that it is the ipod and not the headphones. The ones im using I bought not even a week ago..and I doubt they have the exact same problem as my old ones.

Try testing them on something with mono sound.

edit: also ensure that they're plugged in correctly
