Who do you think can make the criminals up the top of the food chain accountable when the reality is that even the strings of Presidents of the entire world is being pulled by people we do not elect nor are they accountable to the laws of the land.
Many foundations, philanthropic and charitable organizations, think tanks, institutes, lobbyist organization, pressure groups and so numerous others dictate to governments on how its foreign and domestic policies will pan out.
Its such a group like the council on foreign relations, the Bilderberg group, CIA, The Pentagon, S&B, the Trilateral commission, WHO, the World bank, IMF, The bank of international settlements, The Federal Reserve, The elite central banking oligarchs, Numerous super rich elite families and various royal families.
It is in the end the grassroots who must make these people accountable and curb these people's excesses

If the western world kept their corporatist in check, then governments would not have to impose their Military outside their borders. If governments would implement a non-interventionist foreign policy, then they would not have to do so many things they are doing now, creating unrest and hostilities.
If Wall Street and the City of London were to be more transparent and their activities more regulated (speculation made illegal) then the prices would reflect realities better.
The two above alone would keep oil prices and respective food prices much lower.

You're making some assumptions. For example, if the entirety of the Middle East and the Sahara desert turn into farmland due to global warming (it was global cooling that created the Sahara desert), why would there be a food shortage at all?

There will undoubtedly be food shortages, but it won't be due to global warming. It will be the next 2 billion people in the worlds population that will appear in the next 40 years that will overreach the global food supply.

I read through the list of 20 reasons why we should expect food shortages next winter, and not one of them had anything to do with global warming. http://www.ssmi.com/msu/msu_data_description.html#...
