Why does my vcr player un-ravel the tapes?

The tape isn't spinning around the large silver cylinder. I've cleaned the whole area & it still does it.

    It's broken. And VCRs aren't worth fixing. Watch for one at local garage sales or on craigslist.

    get another one at a thrift store, or better yet buy a Tivo or other DVR and not have to bother with tapes.

    The drive belt has broken on the take up spool drive.
