I've used Xlink Kai, its relatively inferior to Adhoc Party at least in the user friendly. If you really don't want to run both at once, for reasons I probably would never understand, then I can at least confirm Xlink works fine just not as well as Adhoc Party. This is mostly due to how unfriendly the damn thing is to the user at times. It takes a while to get used to.
The upside to it is that it isn't system specific. You can play 360, PS3, PSP, and several other game system on it for free. The Xbox community is actually probably the largest as its full of people who simply are not willing to pay for a Gold Member account, but the PSP has a pretty big one as well mostly for the Monster Hunter series.
