Do you have to use an oil filter wrench when installing a new oil filter?

Can you get it tight enough by using only your hand? Its real important that it does not become loose and fall off!

You usually can't get a good enough grip on them because of their awkward locations to get them tight enough. That last 1/4 turn is fairly hard.

every oil filter I have ever seen either says only tighten by hand or has a picture of a wrench with a cross through it, you put a smear of new oil on the rubber ring tighten it until it contacts the face of the housing then tighten a further 3/4 turn BY HAND, for a woman who is too weak to do that you can use a strap wrench or a socket oil filter wrench very carefully

I've never put it on with any wrench.

Clean the block where the filter goes, open a bottle of oil and dip your finger in it and rub it around the rubber gasket on the filter. Put it on until it stops turning easily, and then go 1/4 turn more. That should do it.

Yes tighten it by hand as tight as you canand be sure to put oil on the gasket before you spin it on, this is good enough and it will not fall off..Fram and Purolater have special coatings on the end to get a good grip with your hand.
