"I was so nervous, I had a pit in my stomach." Yikes!?

Does this refer to having a bad feeling in the pit of one's stomach? I hear this ALL THE TIME!

If that is the way you hear it, it is being said wrong. It should be it should be something like it was so bad I could feel it in the pit of my stomach, not I had a pit in my stomach. It is a minor difference, but in the pit means at the bottom of my stomach, a pit means a hole.

    Pit In My Stomach

I've never actually heard it put exactly like that but I would assume that it means (if actually said like that) it feels as if there is a bottomless hole (read: pit) in your stomach. Maybe it's referring to that feeling where your stomach is hollow and you feel like you've missed a step on the stairs. Do you know what I mean? Hope this helps!

The whole bad feeling in the pit of ones stomach... THAT I have heard before. It means just that, too. There is a bad feeling low in their stomach.

I have heard this quite a number of times; it's ignorance on the part of the speaker, as it makes absolutely no sense. Of course, this is referring to a bad feeling in the pit of one's stomach, not an actual pit in there!

I just Googled the phrase, and the fact that BOTH "pit of the stomach" AND "pit in my stomach" are listed shows that both are used. I myself have a pit in the pit of my stomach!

Yep like the other guy said "I can feel it in the Pit of my Stomach"

I think it just means someone's stomach feels like it has a pit in it...
