I put a 1GB RAM stick in my computer, and now it won't turn on?

Whenever I try to turn it on, all I hear is a faint clicking noise which sounds like its coming from the motherboard.

I don't know the specifics of the computer, its a 2005 Alienware Area-51, runs off DDR2 RAM, and that's all I really know about it.

My friend gave me a 1GB stick of RAM to compliment my other 1GB (Two 512 sticks) and I put it in all the way, and when i went to turn it on it wouldn't boot up.

Update:

Edit: after it wouldn't turn on, i took it out and it still wouldn't turn on

Clicking noises during boot-up tend to mean hard drive trouble. The clicking is usually the arm that does the reading and writing trying to find something on the disk and failing.

Problem could have nothing to do with the RAM, but, FYI, adding a single 1Gig stick to a machine that has a pair of 512 Meg sticks might not work. The mother board may need RAM to be added in pairs. Check the machine's specifications online if you can.

Again, it "sounds" like a hard drive problem.

    Good luck.

the obtrusive factor to do is pull the stick of ram and check out as nicely. If it works with out the hot ram put in then the hot ram is the two undesirable or no longer the superb type on your computing device or unlike minded at the same time with your computing device. the 12 GB unfastened out of 232 GB refers on your hardchronic and has no longer something to do with RAM. Is is DDR2 ram or DDR or another this you may desire to nicely known earlier you purchase the ram.

It could be that the memory stick is bad, or it's not compatible with the memory that already in it, or it has to be installed as a pair. Try removing one of the other sticks and see if it works. If that doesn't work, run it by itself. If it still doesn't work it's probably bad. If it works by itself, it's most likely not compatible with the other memory.

Take it back out, if it boots then the RAM is bad !

your pc cannot handle that much ram or it already was really old so you might need to buy a new one because it could explode
