Sorry but nearly all the answers before this one are not correct, you can stop the update without resorting to modifying your registry or deleting files and it is very simple.
Go to the updates web page, the Windows Live Essentials (WLE) update will be in the list of updates waiting to be installed. There are two parts to the updates page, on the left is the part where you can choose what updates are available, on the right is what the updates site determines are recommended, required or critical updates. Click on the left one, it opens up a list with lots of names of the updates, each one has a tick box, the critical and recommended updates are already ticked, the optional ones are not. Un-tick the Live essentials updates, and now right click on the name (text) part of the WLE update, click on Hide Update from the options listed and it will no longer bother you.
If at some later date you want to reload it the is an option far left to Show hidden updates, you just tick the box to allow it to download and install.

Go to windows update
Rt click on the windows live essentials update
click on hide update
This will hide the update without turning off all the other updates which is not a good idea

Hi same problem happened with me on my Windows Vista all I did was removed Windows Live Essentials 2011, run CCleaner (to remove registry and other entries) and then a clean installation of Windows Live Messenger 14.
Remove windows live messenger and run any registry cleaner once its done. Restart your laptop and then download Windows Live Messenger 14.

hi i imagine of you want to quit messenger and eliminate it from the bottom blue bar and then it wont get up. also yet another rationalization why it really is doing that's because the you've it on the putting on the on the spot initiate so bypass onto your MSN settings and modify that.
