How long was the longest road trip you have taken with just yourself and your young child?

*Cough*

I'm leaving next week on a road trip to clown college, hosted by Mozz. From what I can tell, it's gonna be about a 9 hour drive (with stops for gas/food/bathroom/etc). I've decided to break the trip up in half and grab a hotel because I don't know how Johnny will do in the car for such a long period of time, especially when there won't be anyone else in the car to entertain him (read, play games, etc), since I will be driving.

Just out of curiosity, what's the longest road trip you have had with your younger child?

Have fun and honk Mozz's nose for me :)

Source(s): Longest drive with just me and my son (he was less than a year old) was 8 hours from Kansas to Texas. It didn't go so bad :) Portable DVD player was a life saver!

I did two hours down to my in-laws' when my son was maybe 3mo. Lucked out; he slept like a log the whole way. Other than that, my husband's always been with me, so we have one to drive and one to man the troops.

I think breaking it up is definitely a good idea. Anyway you can leave either really early in the morning or really late at night? That's what we always do. Pack up the car the night before and take some coffee in a traveling mug. I can do 5:30 in the morning: there's less traffic, and the kids usually sleep for 3+ hours. We stop somewhere for potty breaks and breakfast when they wake up. Makes for much more delightful travel when they only really have to entertain themselves for two or so hours of a much longer trip.

I drove by myself from Connecticut to Tennessee which was a 16 hour drive with all 4 of my boys when my youngest was 2 middle son was 5 and twins were 7. I drove straight through just stopping for gas and to eat and use the restroom at rest stops. We have a DVD system in our van so that helped. My husband hooked up the xbox to it so they had movies and video games on the ride down LOL they also brought books and things to use.

For me driving straight through was better because I just wanted to get it all done in one day rather than drive 8 full hours one day and have to do it again the next day. Since your trip is shorter if you split it up you won't have as much to drive in one day which might be better for Johnny. I just felt hat with it being 8 hours each day I might as well just drive straight through and make it one day of torcher instead of two LOL

Across the country! 3000 miles. My two daughters are well behaved... but I stopped every two hours to let us stretch and potty. I bought these neat little plastic lap trays that had pockets in the sides and I packed each child a very special tote bag with activities in it, coloring books, etc. All stuff they had never used before, so it was more entertaining. I also gave each of them their own little cd player "disc man" thingie, with headphones, and I burned each kiddo about 10 cds of music... this gave them lots to do.

Having two kids is probably worse than one... entertain each other BAH! They just fight! :-) I suppose that is their form of entertainment! LOL

I would make that 9 hour trip in one go... just get it over with... but you have to do whatever you're comfortable with... the LAST thing you want to do is have an upset kiddo and be distracted while you're driving. NOT SAFE!

PS-you didn't mention how old your child was... boy does that make a difference!

    HAVE FUN!

We drove from Nashville TN to Chicago IL (10 hours) on a Thursday. On Tuesday we drove from Chicago IL back to Nashville TN (10 hours). 2 days later we drove from Nashville, TN to Tampa Florida (16 hours).

    March 31 - April 8, 2011

Those times are about 1 hour longer each way than it'd normally be because I had to stop for him to get out once in a while. We haven't gone on another trip since and this was 2 weeks ago. I plan to fly to Chicago this summer. I am offically done driving with my toddler.

Well I don't have kids. But i've been on a 13 hour drive with my 2 year old brother. My parents did 12 hour trip with me and my sister when I was only like 1 and she was 5.

One and a half hours, to my parent's house. I'm not very adventurous. But I have done it with 2 kids under 3, does that count for bravery??

I hope you have a great time, anyhoo-hey, I am about 9 or so hours from N. Va.-there aren't clown colleges in Ky are there??

Just her and I? Don't laugh.. only about 30 minutes. :-)

You are definitely doing the right thing by stopping half way through and staying in a hotel for the night. 9 hours in a car is a lot for ME, so I can totally understand how a child may not do so well.

Have fun & enjoy your trip.

6 hour drive from Phoenix to San Diego- it wound up taking more like 8 hours. The youngest was 6 months, and I had to stop and feed her twice.

8 hours. Get some travel games and a portable DVD player. It keeps them entertained. They will also fall asleep usually. Don't forget the snacks.

  • I've driven the kidlets to my sis's.. 9-11 hours away depending on how many stops I had to make. It went better then I expected!
