Laptop screen went out - what could have caused this?

The screen on my Compaq Presario A600 flickered black vertical lines across the screen then it went completely black and won't come back on. What are the worse and least things that could be wrong with it? What is the price range for repairs if it is worth fixing?

Update:

I just turned on my laptop so it wasn't hot enough to overheat. The fan on that laptop is awful so I know what happens with the screen when it over heats and cuts off. So I know it's not that.

It could be a failed video card. Or you have used your laptop too long and the electrical circuits short-circuited. It is also possible that your laptop's fan or cooling system failed.

Try to cool off your laptop using a USB cooling fan if your laptop heats up during use.

it could be a motherboard problem. If your computer doesn't open that means you have to buy another one instead of fixing it.
