If you deleted the file and it went to the Recycle Bin, then the file can be restored after you open the Recycle Bin folder. If you have cleaned the Recycle Bin, then take a screen capture of the background image and make a new image using any good graphics editor.

You may have to clean up your Desktop of folders if image takes full screen. Just hide the Icons. Right-click on Desktop>View>uncheck "Show Desktop Icons".
Usually the Desktop images are *.bmp format so you could do a wild card search of computer for all BMPs:

If you haven't installed any new programs, you could try a Restore Point one day prior to when you deleted the file.

I'm not sure... but one way I can think of kinda saving it is to put all files and desktop icons into a folder and moving that to the corner of the pic (the least wanted corner of the pic - OR i suppose u can move the folder into your documents so its completely hiddne).
THEN (i've never used vista... but i'm sure it has it too) make it where your task bar at the bottom of the screen goes away when your mouse isn't on it. SO now your background is completely empty.
Take a screenshot (PrtSc button) and then open paint or some other image editing program u have, and paste it. Save as a jpg format and you have your picture back! (in a weird round-about way, but hey!)
Haha, hope someone can suggust an easier way of solving this!

For those still looking for an answer, I found it today by doing a little legwork myself... 2 options to locate/recover a background photo or picture that u would like to save to another fold::
a) it should be under C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery
b) right-click your desktop, then click Personalize, the Desktop Background & copy that photo or picture from there.

Use the Print demonstrate reveal button (which will opt to be located on the the appropriate option suited of your keyboard) whilst you have the checklist open. Then paste the screenshot (suited-click, choose 'Paste') the appropriate option right into a application alongside with MSPaint or Irfanview. Then shop it as a JPEG, PNG, BMP or GIF, and use it like a common historic past.

go to the backgrounds program and see what it is name ,and then do a search for it .
when you find it ,open the folder it is in and copy it to your picture folder.
