I want to visit the Middle East sometime..?

I have a keen interest in Middle Eastern culture and I am very eager to actually visit a Middle Eastern country. I understand that part of the world is going through a great deal of turmoil, so I'll obviously have to be careful about where I choose to go and be wise. An aunt of mine lived and worked in Saudi Arabia for thirty years and she advised me against going there. I am not overly enthusiastic about visiting Iran, Iraq or Afghanistan at the present time either.

Where would be the most accessible country for me to visit? I don't mind too much about the Islamic traditions (wearing a hijab is fine), but I don't want to really have to spend my days in a Burqa if I visit a country (they look a bit claustrophobic to me). So I'd like to go somewhere where I can respect the traditions without having to be too strict.

Jordan, Kuwait, Egypt, Syria (not at this moment there is a revolution there at this time), U.A.E, Tunisia, Morocco (I think there might be protests there at this moment too),

Stay away from Saudi arabia/yemen/oman they are not exactly good destinations and lebanon is a dirty country as lebanese people are really nasty.

Ok, first of all as a Middle Eastern myself I would also not advise you to currently visit Iraq or Afghanistan, and as a foreigner Saudi Arabia would not really be much fun.. Also Afghanistan is not in the Middle East, but it's in Central Asia. As for Iran, no idea.

Other countries that are nice to visit would be Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Jordan, UAE (Dubai), Oman, maybe Algeria and Morocco (not really sure about what's going on there currently).

Libya, Syria, Bahrain and Yemen are not safe as well in the current situations.

As for Kuwait and Qatar, they are safe, but there's not much to see or do there.

    Hope I helped.

    either U.A.E ,Lebanon or Jordan

U.A.E and Lebanon are a bit expensive,U.A.E and Jordan are safer than Lebanon (you really can't predict what the situation in Lebanon would be on a long term, one week it looks like a civil war might break, and the next you'll find the major party leaders having lunch together :/! )

Lebanon and Jordan have better weather (U.A.E is suffocatingly HOT!! ),better history (way better in Jordan) and less traditions to follow.

since i am from Jordan i tried to give you as an unbiased answer as possible! but honestly if you want to go to the middle east Jordan is the best place to go,it's perfectly safe here,A LOT of history and places to check out, weather is reasonable (it could reach 40 C in the summer :/! ) and the people are very friendly and almost everyone speaks a bit of English in case you needed to ask someone

hope i've helped! and of course you're welcome to contact me too if you need anything :)

    Hello.

I have seen some of the answers and I just want to say Egypt is not a safe place for Americans right now. My husband is Egyptian and we were planning a trip there this summer but he said that he would be worried about my safety since I am American.

The reason for this is because after the revolution in Egypt Hosni Mobarak had released over 9,000 prisoners who were terrorists, and so forth and only about 3,000 have been caught he said. So he feels that it will take another 7 months or so before its possible to consider it safe to travel there.

Its good you are asking this question. I could not answer it but just wanted to reply because I saw some answers suggesting Egypt. Best of travels.

Jordan & Lebanon are ur best choice! they're both modern and u dont have to wear any "hijab" either, there's pubs and clubs, but i advice u more to go to Jordan, because its the safest accros the entire Middle East and their people are very friendly and hospitable!

I am Jordanian, u r most welcome to contact me in private ;)
