What happens to elite players if a club is relegated?

For example, suppose Leicester Tigers (through some act of God) were to find themselves relegated to the RFU Championship at the end of next season. Would Toby Flood find himself playing at that level, or would there be a mechanism to keep him in the Premiership?

There would most probably be something in the contract agreed by both club and player that if the team goes down then they have the right to opt out but that would only be for elite players such as Toby Flood who need to stay in the Premiership because he is starting for England. And if the club don't let elite internationals go then the National Rugby Board such as the RFU would get involved as they do not want to lose their national talents.

I think so. They are contracted to the club unless they have a clause in their contract that allopws them to leave if the club is relegated.

In France, Craig Gower was laying for Bayonne and he had to accept that if the club was relegated, he went with the club.
