Note: Anytime one freeze's fish it's a good idea to mark the date on the bag along with species...

I live in Louisiana, and we freeze fish all the time. Whatever type of fish you want to freeze will do best if you cover it with water before freezing. Just place the fish in a zip lock bag, fill with water and freeze. This will help prevent freezer burn. When you are ready to defrost, just put the frozen bag into the fridge for a day or two. If you need it quicker, just put the bag under running water until it is defrosted.

This method is more for avoiding freezer burn on the fish then long storage time. I would say around 6 months. Me and a friend have used this method for freezing salmon steaks to be used a couple months down the road. If you plan on eating it within 2 weeks do not bother with this method do to it takes a long time to thaw. just put in a zip lock and toss in deep freeze.

    Good for what?

Back in the '60s, the rage was to freeze your (cleaned) fish in milk cartons filled with water.

Supposedly they kept their flavor/texture, etc. for several months and was superior to wrapping with freezer paper, waxed paper, plastic wrap, or such.

I kind of doubt that any method is practical beyond 2 months maximum.
