I didn't read the book but to analyze from an outside perspective. The author has had a very boring life but I assume he become famous suddenly or something else that would put him in the publics eye. Regardless the boring life he has is now being exaggerated implies it is now embodying an extreme. As to what that is can only be decided with context but if my guess on fame is correct it is most likely made to seem more interesting so small things in his life are made more dramatic. Maybe things the author does are exaggerated to make him look worst than what he is actually doing like he forgets to recycle a water bottle and now he hates the environment. Finally if he is a wash up and lives in a small town or area where people know each other his standing as an author makes him known but everyone in the town gossips and spreads just how boring his life is and makes it much more dramatic than it actually is. I hope this is helpful but it might just be me throwing out a variety of scenarios hoping one will land. Good luck.

His life was uneventful but people over-exaggerated it so much that his life seemed eventful.

The authors life was not as boring as one might be led to believe.
