Tennessee Ernie Ford was one of my mother's favourite singers during the 1950s. She had a collection of 78s which she frequently played.

I remember songs like “Shotgun Boogie”, “Blackberry Boogie”, “Kiss Me Big”, and his big hits “Sixteen Tons” and “The Ballad Of Davy Crockett”.

Although he wasn't a Country singer, he did record a lot of popular Country songs.

He was a radio announcer, and hosted an early morning country music disc jockey program titled "Bar Nothin' Ranch Time", and soon joined KXLA, Pasadena, were he stayed throughout the 1940s.

Burl Ives was an American Folk singer who recorded a few Country songs, notably the Hank Cochran songs “Little Bitty Tear” and “Funny Way Of Laughing”.

He also had hits with “The Wild Side Of Life” and “Call Me Mr. In-between”. Most of his folk songs were songs for children.

He started his own radio show “The Wayfaring Stranger” in 1940, but had previously performed on WBOW in Indiana from 1931.

Slim Whitman was very popular in the late 50s and early 60s. A Country singer who was probably the first to cross over to Pop (with his massive hit “Rose Marie”). Slim joined the Grand Old Opry in 1955.

    I love his song "China Doll"(1957) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fqvyz8dhG4.

Of the three you name Burl Ives was never considered a Country Singer but a Folk singer.

Tennessee Ernie Ford (real name Ernest Jennings Ford) b1919-d 1991 first recorded in 1948

and guested on the Opry in 1950. He was the first Country Artist to appear at the London Palladium

and, surprisingly was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1990.

The great Slim Whitman first recorded in1949 and has recorded albums in every decade since

He joined the Opry in 1955 but only remained a member a short while. He became the second

Country Artist to appear at the London Palladium. Considering the part he has played in

popularizing Country Music throughout the world, shamefully he has not been elected to the Hall

    of Fame
