Traveling by myself to South Korea - I'm a woman?
Hi I'm a young woman and I'm traveling by myself to Seoul, South Korea over the summer. I was advised not to walk around the city by myself, but I'm afraid that's what I'm planning to do(since i'm going as a tourist and I don't know anyone there). People told me that I could get picked off the streets and forced into the prostitution business and no one would ever see me again. Is this true?
I read that Seoul is a very safe city for women, and I speak very little Korean. I am traveling by myself and I am Asian, so does this increase my chances for getting picked off the streets?
I know how to defend myself but I'm seriously worried...

Some rules of thumb I have when traveling.
Keep electronic devices concealed unless using them. Phones, camera's, laptops, etc. In many places, having those items in view will make you a target.
If you use facebook or some other social networking, keep updating your itinerary for your family and friends.
Exude confidence. Dogs can sense fear and so can people. You are a capable young woman and not a scared little girl. Keep that in mind.
Try to stay public. If you are going to go out at night, keep to well lit public areas when at all possible.
Money. I always keep my money in a wallet around my neck. I was mugged in Amsterdam and all they got was my cd player. They missed the 4,000 guilders hanging from my neck.
Dress to your area. When I traveled in Europe, I was always mistaken for Canadian, English, or German. I could always spot Americans though, by their dress and how they acted.

Please
Thank you
Thanking someone in their own language goes a long long way.
Also, learn where the Police Stations are in relation to where you are staying. If you were my little sister I would just remind you to take your pepper spray...since you are not, go get some pepper spray (and for the love of god, dont take it in your carry on luggage....that happened to me and I thought I was going to be arrested).
Be alert. Be aware. And you will be safe. Seoul is great city from what my Uncle always said, I am sure you will be fine and will have the experience of a lifetime.

It is a long way more secure than any North American town I were to. As lengthy as you steer clear of Itaewon on a Friday or Saturday night time. It is wherein the army are foreigners cross and is probably the most hazardous side of Seoul whilst they're all under the influence of alcohol.
