Although pop-ups and other ads help pay for free sites like Yahoo, they are a bother to us all. Block ALL pop-ups, pop-unders, banners, and other ads FOREVER with add-ons for any site and any browser. It's fast and easy to do. (You'll never miss those ads!)

First, enable the pop-up blocker for your browser, The exact method is different in each browser, but it is Tools > Internet Options > Privacy in IE, Tools > Options > Content in Firefox, and under the wrench (gear) in Chrome.

Add-ons for different browsers:(for Windows users:)

For Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Opera

    http://simple-adblock.com/ (for IE 8)

    For Firefox, install 'AdBlock Plus':

(Also consider Flashblock and NoScript for more blocking and security as well as speed. These can be turned on for individual sites, or just temporarily.)

'Yahoo Mail Hide Ad Panel' for firefox. it works 100%

Unfortunately adblock cannot hide the space occupied by the same - so your full screen width is still not utilized and up to 32% of your screen is covered by the now empty banner.
