I've been in shelters before (not any in Florida) and the pros are a place to sleep, food, maybe other necessities like pads, showers, clothes etc., and sometimes nice volunteers. They usually know what else is out there for homeless in the area-other shelters, soup kitchens, day labor, where they give you this or that. How and where to apply for this or that. Networking with other homeless. Stuff like that.

The cons- They are usually pretty crowded, and if your a girl you usually end up in a women only shelter which means tons of kids and babies everywhere. Sometime you get stressed or unhappy/unwilling volunteers who can be mean or bully and you still have to be all thankful and respectful even if they aren't. They just assume you have a drug problem a lot, and treat you like you do. Check in is usually long and frustrating and often has to be repeated daily.

You need to watch out for illnesses, especially respiratory stuff-they spread so fast. Lice and fleas. Other homeless packed in with you, it can get stressful, and theft. I'm not saying all of this happens at every shelter everyday-you want to check and see what the deal is though. Feel the place out.

Personally, I always preferred being out and about. A tent or a squat. But I always had a "battle buddy" (a good trusted friend) with me, so we could watch out for each-other.
