Does whining belong in hockey?

The man many consider the game's greatest player was also it's biggest whiner - Wayne Gretzky. In his opinion (especially in his Edmonton years), his team has never been called for a penalty it deserved. And with that annoying voice of his, I'm sure he drove refs nuts back in the 80s. He was much the same behind the Phoenix bench.

Sometimes a whine is used strategically - Mike Gillis did that in the first round. He didn't care about the reffing, he just wanted to distract the media and protect his team from all the 'collapse' and 'choke' stories that would otherwise have been written.

And, honestly, I've seen it in every sport from both the players and the fans. It's human nature to want to complain when we feel we've been wronged - but when we give in to that urge it invariably sound whiny.

So, while I don't like it, it's always going to be there.
