When you think of Howlin Wolf ?

I've always just thought of Howlin Wolf as one of the greatest singers in the Chicago style of blues. One of the things that really got me into Wolf was his guitarist Hubert Sumlin. I consider him one of the greatest in that style. Wolf pretty much just uses the guitar like a prop. The same way Elvis Presley would sing with a guitar strapped around his shoulder. It was pretty much for the visual effect.
His harmonica playing is fine in my opinion but nothing good by itself. The way he uses it to fill in between verses is what makes it great. There's another video I just watched where he does Dust My Broom and there's where you can really hear him using the harmonica as a lead instrument to trade off between Sumlin's leads.
Primarily though I feel it's the backup band mixing so perfect to give it that down low beat that just makes a setting for his voice to shine like it does.

More of a Harp player, but When I think of Howlin Wolf, it's that voice. From what I notice, and that is mostly a Youtube education, he doesn't throw a lot of energy into guitar and employs a better guitar player. But on the other hand his composition of guitar into song is his strong arm.
Note: readers shouldn't jump to conclusions on my "mostly a youtube" comment. I have listened to Howlin Wolf way before youtube. I just never focused on who was playing guitar all the time. Also on London Sessions, he calls out some instruction to others joining the session. Eric Clapton being one of them.

More of a Vocalist/Harp player.
I personally don't like his harp playing. Though it IS good stuff and I can listen to his songs all day.. I like more staccato notes and a sharp hard attack. That's the reason I prefer Junior Wells over guys like Little Walter.
But the Wolf, Waters and Wells are Incredible Vocalists. Must be the "W" named people......

It's his voice and commanding stage presence that grabs me. Saw him perform in a small club and he was sitting in a chair on stage blowing harp w/ his head down. When he suddenly stood up to sing half the audience jumped backwards.

he was a great slide player also. but as has been said, it's that voice that makes him a legend. i like watching him play the harmonica. with those giant hands of his he might as well be playing a toothpick.
