Are we citizens of the United States or Americans?
Here is a challenge question for this week. Many times in the news we hear "The American's" but America covers a lot of ground.
THe North American Continent currently has three countries residing on it. The United States of America, Canada and Mexico (Sometimes referred to as the United States of Mexico.)
So I ask you all which one are we. Americans or Citizens of the United States of America?

actually, the north american continent has over 20 countries officially.
a lot of those are islands though. but even if you just mean the actual continent, remember central america is a region, not its own continent, so a lot of those countries are physically on the north american continent too.
but, those countries don't have the word america in their name. so when they say "americans" and they are talking about a country, it's understood which country they mean and that its short for the full name of the country.
but yes, you could refer to anyone from any north OR south american country as "american", in the same way that german and english are both european.
it's usually clear by context, so i don't think it's actually wrong to use that term both ways.
a lot of other countries have longer versions of their name that are not used. like we call people chinese instead of "citizens of the peoples republic of china", but no one thinks they're talking about some pre-existing version of the government just because they drop the words.

The two are the same, nothing in the world is going to change the Great USA as it stands. God Bless America and all that dwell there.
