Cataract surgery is NOT done with lasers. The procedure is called Phacoemulsification and uses an ultrasound probe to emulsify and remove the bad lens after which an intraocular lens implant is fitted to replace your original lens. You are awake for the surgery which is very quick and involves no pain. Your eyeball is numbed and you are usually sedated as well. The most uncomfortable part is the eyedrops before surgery which sting a little.

I had this surgery two weeks ago and my vision was immediately restored and there has been no discomfort. You will need to take eye drops following the surgery for a few weeks to help the cornea heal and to ensure there is no infection or inflammation. The only thing out of the ordinary I've noticed was a dark band at the periphery of my vision. I assume this was the incision in my cornea and it has diminished over time as it heals.

Your eye lids are held open so that is a little bizarre, your eyeball will be numbed, it is almost always done with a laser (don't go to a Doc who doesn't do it that way) and can take as little as 10 minutes per eye. The ones I know about were done on both eyes but with a break of a couple weeks between. Recovery is only a few hours with a few restrictions for the first week while the incision solidifies so you don't have problems.

Piece of cake. You don't feel anything. Your eyes are numbed up and they have you situated so you stay still. The surgery is so routine doctors can almost do it with their eyes closed. Patients who come back to us for follow up after cataract surgery almost always remark "I don't know why I didn't do this sooner".
