how to measure hands?

Okay so....

5'2"=62" 62/4= 15.5= 16.1 hands

5'4"=64" 64/4= 16 hands

what am I missing here...?

Update:

NO RUDE ANSWERS PLEASE.

if you don't know then don't respond.

Update 2:

honey you gotta read the rest of the question...

62" is shorter than 64," so how come...

62"=16.1 hands and 64"=16 hands?

Update 3:

WOOOW foxhunter, no YOUR math sucks.

62/4 = 15.5

=O

I know where they measure horses from.... I am not asking HOW to measure hands, I just can't figure out the math on that one...

Update 4:

okay so the x4 thing doesn't work on all of them...

thanks! :)

    Actually 62inches is 15.2hh and 64" is 16hh.

    A 15hh horse is 60 inches

    15.1hh =61"

    15.2hh=62"

    15.3hh=63"

    16.0hh=64"

    so on!

    How I remember is that if you know the height in hands (ex.15hh)multiply it by 4!also,a 5' person is 15hands!!

    Hope I helped!

    Horses are measured in hands (1 hand = 4 inches). You measure the horse from mid fetlock (the area similar to a persons ankle joint)to the top of the withers (the bony lump at the base of the neck where the neck meets the spine).

    If you want to use a tape to measure from the ground you can buy a "height & weight tape" at any feed or tack store. Be sure it's the one for horses because they have them for other animals and be sure it's in inches & lbs. unless you know the metric system. This takes into consideration the distance from the ground to the fetlock and it is not added in.

    Your math sucks!

    5'2" = 62" 62/4 = 15.2

    ********************* ADD ON **************************

    No, your math is wrong! 62" is 15.2 - where you are wrong is on the .5 which is not 5" (which would be 16.1) the ,5 is half a hand which is 2"

    OR 4 into 62 = 15 with 2 inches over

    Apology please!

    It does work on all measurements providing you know how to do math without a calculator or if you do use one you know how to convert decimal into fractions.

    A hand is 4 inches. So if a horse is 14.3, they are 59 inches from the ground to the withers. From 14.3 it goes to 15 hands, and so on.

    ok so the easiest way is to measure to the top of their shoulder, see how many inches it is and divide by 4, that'll give you their height in hands :)
