Could a 6 string Banjo be played like a guitar?

I play the guitar and i'm looking into getting a banjo (because i love the country sound of a banjo) but i don't have the money to afford lessons for it, so i'm wondering if the tuning of the strings on the 6-string banjo is the same as a guitar, and if they could be played the same way. i know a 5-string banjo is different, that's why i want a 6string one.

thanks :)

A six-string banjo is played and tuned like a guitar but you can't play it in the "Scruggs" or Reno three finger style like you can a 5-string banjo. On a 5-string banjo, the top string is a "drone" string that is not usually fretted while the other 4 strings form the chord which are tuned to an open G chord. In three-finger style, you will have to learn "roll," or picking, patterns to play different songs. If you know a good bit about guitar, especially fingerstyle guitar, I suggest getting a 5-string instead of a six-string and just getting an instructional book with a DVD. A six string is good if you are in a band or something and want to add that banjo sound without having to learn a new instrument.

How To Play 6 String Banjo

If you want to play a guitar buy a guitar, a six string banjo is a banjo. in 1956 my dad gave me a six banjo that had belong to his Grandfather, who played it in the 1800s. I learned to play it like the banjo it is..There is nothing that sounds worse than some idiot trying to play this instrument like a guitar. It is a banjo and always has been. I still have that banjo, it's in a glass case in my music room. I still play a 6 string, along with a 5 string, several guitars and 25 other stringed instruments from around the world, I can tell tell you that none of them are played exactly the same. if you have a 6 string banjo tune it to a Eb tuning and play it like a banjo.

You can tune any instrument however you want to. Therefor, while it may not be the "proper" tuning, you could tune your 6 string banjo however you like your guitar to be tuned, usually EADGBE, from low to high. Since each fret still represents a half step, and all the strings go all the way to the end, you can play your guitar tabs and it will sound the same, but with the banjo sound.

In my opinion, I wouldn't consider you a "banjo player," but rather a guitar player playing guitar music on a banjo. Actual banjo playing requires a whole new set of skills that aren't as prevalent with the guitar.

Kind of a silly question - a 6 string banjo is nothing more than a standard guitar neck attached to a banjo pot. It plays and is tuned exactly like any other guitar.

It's exactly like playing a guitar, except you may need to adjust your playing style a bit because of the very bright tone and lack of sustain. Songs that work on guitar often don't on a banjo-guitar. Nice for ragtime though.
